ASU will be a tough out

May 26, 2015, 5:33 PM

If ASU's starting catcher makes it back by Friday as they expect, they will start 7 players batting over 0.300. The lowest batting avg in the order will be RJ Ybarra at 0.284, and he happens to have 0.383 on base % and a 0.493 slugging %. The good news is that there's no reason to deliberate over pitch around strategies. There is no weakness in the lineup. The 9 hole hitter is the 2nd baseman - he's hitting 0.308. ASU often consumes the pitch count of the opposing starter by the 5th inning. In fact they've scored 59 runs in their 55 games in the 5th inning. Should be a nice challenge for Matthew. I'm sure he's staying up late watching video and looking for each hitters weaknesses. That doesn't guarantee that he'll be able to exploit those weaknesses, but no one's going to study harder. Wouldn't be fun and interesting to watch if it was easy :)

Maybe... But have they played against any pitcher of Crownovers ability? I would think not.

Actually they would've faced a young man that looks kind of like a righty version of Matthew. James Kaprielian is UCLA's Friday starter. He locates his 89-92 mph fastball well. He throws his curve at multiple speeds (78-85 mph). I think it may be the best curve in the country. He has an effective slider and a good change up. Matthew has the better change up and his 2 seam fast ball may move more. Even though Matthew's curve is much improved this year, it's not as good as Kaprielian's. ASU has definitely seen some good pitching.

Yeah, I guess that was a bad example :)

No , It's a very GOOD example.

For a Clemson fan , that is.

Tough for sure but a great regional for us. These teams

May 26, 2015, 7:38 PM

have all lost their fair share of games this year. I wouldn't be shocked if we won the regional.

Of course we had Goose and Crown last year, but I think this regional sets up as good as we could hope for being one of the last teams in.

I believe we can beat anyone, but against this level of competition the better team has no more than a 2/3rd chance of winning a given game. I would give us that 2/3rds chance in the ASU game. Having said that, few want Matthew to win more on Friday than I do, and few believe more in his ability.

Might not be a bad time to catch ASU...

May 26, 2015, 8:37 PM

They're only 6-9 over their last 15 games. 34-21 overall and only 9-10 on the road.
Sure, they're hitting .297 as a team, but we're not that far behind at .287.
Got those averages from the NCAA sight, so I guess they're right.
Good luck to our guys,
Go Tigers!!
