An observation from the Wake Forest game

7

Oct 13, 2024, 11:56 AM

This version of the Clemson Tigers is not as talented as the DW and TL teams were. And I mean that in more ways than just QB.

However, this offense is lighting it up in ways that are as good or better than those teams, regardless of talent level. I think the Riley offense is the key to this incongruity. He made that TCU offense go even though he could not recruit with the biggest teams and he is doing something similar here.

At the Wake game, time and time again, I watched as the formations and the route trees put at least one defensive players in the impossible position of having to pick which of two people to cover. The makes for an easy read for Cade - and an easy throw. There were very few tight windows to hit yesterday. And Mafah's running is the perfect complement to the design.

I do not mean any of this to be pessimistic. In fact, the opposite is true. I think that this scheme can allow us to compete - even with teams that may be physically superior to us.

Right now we are playing teams that are not physically superior to us, but by the time we do, I think we may be so good at working this scheme that it won't matter. Riley's scheme will allow us to compete with anybody.

Wow, that is interesting. I didn't know such a ranking existed.

However, I will stand by my statement. There is no way I would favor the 24 team to beat either the 16 team or the 18 team.

That’s a very good honest observation.
My biggest “surprise” is the lack of pressure from our 4 down defensive line. But to their credit, it seems like an offensive lineman has to tackle a d-lineman or when an outside toss or outside zone play where it’s so apparent it has to be called. Go Tigers.!!

We need a bigtime pass rusher and Woods needs to be back in the middle! Hope our lb corps grow up depth is a concern.

The mesh offense Wake runs always gives the D fits until they figure it out.

Agree in general

I think they are trying to grow up the dbs so can blitz more later in the year when not expected as much as past years. Just bend but not break. For now. When we get to championship phase then wide open.

I think Wes is less aggressive than Coach V was and that leads to less sacks. Perhaps he thinks coverage is more important in that regard.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We need to do a better job pressuring the QB, period.***

Wes is sort of wasting his defensive talent. With the nice defensive front Clemson has, there should be more sacks. More 3rd down and long blitzing needs to be had. Even WF did that on our offense on 3rds.The Wake QB had all day to throw. Venables was clearly the superior DC, no doubt. He (Goodwin) is the weak link of the Clemson team, and if he doesn't improve as a DC, perhaps Clemson needs to go outside the box and find another one from an established Power 5 school.

They keep pressure and even better maintain their lanes... rarely do we see large holes for the QB to make aplay through... and it seems they have fixed the edge issues that were exploited in the UGA game...

Oh no, I didn't mean middling at all ! But we are not quite elite either - at least for now.

According to 24/7 has Clemson as the #5 talented team in CFB

....for the 3rd year in a row.

Anyone who doesn't think we have talent doesn't know what they are talking about. I'll take 24/7's roster analysis over some keyboard warrior's opinion any day.

Clemson is more talented than everyone we play, with the exception of GA, and we're not far off.

Reckless,

Those were not the comparisons that I made. Are you willing to say that you would not trade this team for the 16 team or the 18 team ??

Huh?

What Clemson fan in their right mind thinks this team is on par with "16" or "18"?

"Talent" is the most subjective word in all of sports. For example, a lot of NFL players were not actually the most "talented" players in college. Some of the most talented players in college never pan out. Case in-point, I wonder if Nuke Hopkins turns out to be an NFL All-Pro without Jeff Scott and Dabo coaching him at WR?

Clemson's roster talent is fine, per 24/7. How players develop determines their NFL viability, and that was really my point. Clemson can recruit, and on paper we're #5.

Cade is a DW/TL caliper quarterback.

Oct 13, 2024, 1:42 PM

Overall, our receiver group is as good as any group we've had. I'm talking backups and subs not simply starters.

So far we've played teams that do not have the depth we have anywhere on the field. In fact, with so many NIL/portal players on other teams I doubt any of those teams have depth at skilled positions. If they had they wouldn't have replaced them with a diva at start.

So no, I reject the narrative that we aren't as talented across the board with one exception. That defense that held Bama to 16 points (THE BEST COLLEGE FOOTBALL TEAM TO EVER BE ASSEMBLED per ESPiN) was the best defense ever assembled so our present defense, along with every other defense in the country, doesn't come close.

We've had 13 guys who caught passes in one game.

Those two freshmen WRs have only played 4 games and much of the time they've been on the bench.

Cade is just getting started, you'll soon see.

Clemson is a runaway freight train right now, and this type of momentum can handle anybody in the country. The Tigers are reminiscent of some of the great Oklahoma/Nebraska teams of the 1970s and 1980s, just simply grinding opponents to powder, and it won't end this week with Virginia coming to town. it'll be another massacre. Nobody in the ACC is playing better, and that includes Miami. I do have some issues with Wes Goodwin's DC playcalling. He never seems to BLITZ on 3rd and longs. This allowed WF to convert on many of those situations. His ratings to me is a C- D+ as a Defensive Coach. This appears to be Clemson's weakness, and my greatest concern. His best defensive coaching was the 1st half of the Georgia game, and I feel his abilities in dialing up DC calls has regressed. Against stronger opponents, this could be a problem. OC Riley has improved in playcalling, but he still needs to go deep and vertical more, and for God's sake stop the dink and dunk passes. Overall, the Tigers look like they mean business.

Did you watch the Wake game? The cornerbacks were playing 15 yards off our receivers in an effort to not get beaten deep. “Dink and dunk” is exactly what was called for and our coaches and players executed it quite well. Why try to throw deep when the defense is giving you 8-12 yards per play?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Cade and our D still has some work to do, luckily, we have some tune up games

1

Oct 14, 2024, 11:35 AM

A lot of passes were high and some were pretty risky in a very tight window. A better secondary would have picked them off.

I think he's remarkably improved. He just needs to keep grinding. Too bad DJ never put games away to let him play more.

Our D needs a little more work, but that slow mesh will amplify any defensive lapses.
