I guess Coach Venables doesn't have a problem with transfer portal.

Dec 24, 2021, 1:15 PM

Just landed big tight end from Missouri. Just saying.

IMO it will be fascinating to watch how much BV and TE

Dec 24, 2021, 1:24 PM

choose to us the portal.

Might signify some differences in philosophy than their former boss or might be the only way they can build a roster?

I agree and I'm anxious to see what those coaches do moving forward.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He just lost his starting TE in the portal, to the coots!

Dec 24, 2021, 3:04 PM [ in reply to IMO it will be fascinating to watch how much BV and TE ]

So I'd say he needed one. Do we need a TE? We offered a C we could definitely have used, he declined.

Elliott will definitely use the portal, the hoos have had over 20 players transfer out this year. Plenty of PT available there.

I keep asking this question, where is it we have starting reps available? Maybe LB, interior OL. OL just getting hurt guys back creates competition though. Where?

We seem to want guys to transfer in to be back ups. Guys in the portal aren't looking to be back ups.

I just pray we get one soon so all this gibberish can end

I commented this a few days ago... There were 10 players on all sec teams this year that were transfers. There is talent in the portal. I'm not saying lets pull a michigan state and bring in 20 dudes, but lets not act like the portal is full of washed players who can't hack it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And I keep asking, where are our immediate needs?

Dec 24, 2021, 3:16 PM

Positions where a high end portal guy comes in and starts day one? Let's focus on those areas instead of everytime a guy goes somewhere else where if he came here he'd be in a real battle just to play.

We could use an LB. We targeted a C. Where else? Maybe a corner, but weve recruited very well there. Safety? Same, we have highly rated guys there.

Quality guys are going where they know they will be playing. Our issue is mostly deep depth, not front line guys

Re: And I keep asking, where are our immediate needs?

Dec 24, 2021, 4:09 PM

Some seem confused over the use of the portal. I highly doubt Saban, Riley, Kirby, or Day are promising transfer kids a starting spot. And it's not like they lost everyone at said position.

It also seems to be confusion in that the majority in the portal are a senior and only have one year. Scenario.

Oklahoma LB spot (not sure if it was the Sam but I think so) last year had 2 returning starters and a freshman... But they wanted to take one more in recruiting. Didn't get the guy they wanted or something. Anyway, they went out and got a transfer from Tenn. By the time fall camp was over and first game, transfer from Tenn was 2 deep on the roster and ended up playing the most this season.

So, what would Dabo had done. A. Either not taken one that cycle, or B. Take option 3 or 4 which is either a low 3* or pwo. 2 ways to skin the cat. But which one probably has the better chance of becoming a star player?

All of those guys went where there was immediate

Dec 24, 2021, 4:43 PM

PT available. I'll ask you, when you look at our depth chart, where is there the chance for immediate PT? I see it at LB. The staff saw it for one of the best C in the country. Where else?

QB-starter returning and #1 recruit
RB-nope
TE-nope
WR-maybe, but we have 5 guys who will be basically new already in injured returning and incoming freshmen
OL-we've shown we'd take a clear upgrade here

DT-lol, we're loaded for next year
DE-depends on if KJ returns
LB-I think so
CB-we're 6 deep with 4 and 5 star recruits
S-we're 5 deep with guys who have played a lot, and played well

Not many areas of immediate front line need.

We do need deep depth with the shortage of scholarship players. But those guys would be more developmental, and addressed in recruiting. Not portal guys. Portal guys are looking to play

Loaded at DT?

I dont see it.

After Bresee, the talent falls off

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're just blind then

Dec 24, 2021, 5:40 PM

After Breese, all of Davis, Ruke and Williams are NFL players. Davis has a late 2nd round projection this year. And he has at least one year left.

Then you have very highly recruited players in Page and Capehart, and Reuben who made big strides this year.

Blind as a bat

I think LB is good. That C was likely the only transfer that could start. Like some blogger said, not bringing any transfers that would cause others to transfer out. They’ll find one or two underclassmen that are OK being depth. Maybe a grad who just wants to be in the team in prep for a coaching career.

I agree striperfan. If Dabo were to just bring the Dr Pepper punter, with a case of Dr Pepper, everyone would be happy.

My guess is they will use it as often as they see a recognized talent, at least until they get their rosters built to their needs. This is going to be interesting, going forward. I just wonder how many guys will see their careers end due to lack of interest by good programs.

"Only way they can build their roster" seriously at Oklahoma?

Dec 24, 2021, 9:00 PM [ in reply to IMO it will be fascinating to watch how much BV and TE ]

We see posts every day and IMO people do not get it.
Dabo will take transfers, if he sees the right one(s).

But posts like this thread are missing the boat.
BV and TE do not have a pipeline and a reputation of loyalty to that pipeline. Clemson is the same as Ohio state or Bama. Bama has taken very few and Ohio state even less. Whether we like it or not, both programs are historically successful and have huge alumni bases and fan following. Clemson is new to the party and has less “easy” players to choose from - Even in the portal. Dabo has built a program of development, even if for just 3 years. If he starts brining in 1 and 2 year eligible players and these development guys lose backup reps, then they may go elsewhere.
Oklahoma does have a pipeline, but BV does not (overall team). Sure he has defensive players interested. But he is going in with several players following the prior coach, thus bigger gaps. So, yes, he might take more now than later in his tenure.
TE lost some players and as named coach a week before signing day and clearly did not have time to recruit, so yes he should grab some 2/3 star talent from the portal to field a roster.
Dabo needs the “right” players, not simply players.

Anyone who thinks we’re better not using portal is ignorant.***

Any head football coach that doesn't use the portal in the next 5 years...will not succeed....the writing is on the wall...that's the new wave, Dabo knows it and is starting to show interest in the portal.

Being the head coach your main goal is the betterment of your players life, BUT, if you don't win while doing that you get fired....if you don't use the portal in today's game....you will lose

As Brent has made so clear, Dabo was the best thing to happen to him. I imagine he will do as he has said and imitate Dabo's program every way that he can. It started with his taking Miguel Chavis, a guy that was serving as a youth minister at Crosspoint Church when Dabo called him out of the blue on Friday night and offered him a staff position four years ago.

As much as I loved Brent Venables, what he does going forward is of no concern to me, as long as it does not directly impact Clemson.
He stopped being a Clemson man the day he accepted the OU job.
Just saying!
