“Sept. 14, 1985 – David Treadwell showed a foreshadowing of things to come with a 36-yard field goal on the last play of the game to give Clemson a 20-17 victory at Virginia Tech in the season opener. Perry Williams had a Clemson record five pass deflections in this game.
Sept. 21, 1985 – Clemson and Georgia met in the first nationally-televised (CBS) football game from Clemson. Georgia won the game 20-13 thanks to a fourth-quarter fumble recovery by offensive lineman Peter Anderson. No opposing offensive lineman has scored a touchdown in a game since.
Nov. 23, 1985 – Clemson beat South Carolina 24-17 and accepted an Independence Bowl bid.”

As for Treadwell’s game winner, Coach Ford had not decided (or at least had not tipped his hand) who would kick such a last second field goal attempt. According to ClemsonTigers.com:
“Clemson Head Coach Danny Ford had carried four kickers to Blacksburg, VA, figuring he might have to go through all four to get the job done. He had not announced who the kicker would be. When Clemson was driving close to the Hokie goal line, there was jockeying for position on the sideline so Coach Ford could see them. “We were trying to see who could stand closest to Coach Ford,” Treadwell said.”

Clemson’s home game against Maryland brought quite a few fireworks. Coach Ford definitely did not see eye-to-eye with the officials on one particular call that helped Maryland pull out a victory with only 3 seconds left on the clock.
I remember that game vs. Maryland quite well!! I was sitting (OK standing) right in front of Coach Ford while he respectfully shared his opinions on these calls (I am the one in the stands wearing orange and cheering Coach Ford on).
In their infinite wisdom the ACC decided to ban Coach Ford from being on the field (including the sidelines) during the game at Maryland next season (1986).

Clemson and South Carolina each enter their game with identical 5-5 records. There was a lot of talk that the Independence Bowl was on hand to award the winner its bowl bid.
After the win in Columbia, Clemson accepts the Independence Bowl bid and increases it series lead over the Gamechickens to 49-31-3.

Todays player spotlight is #40 Brodey Conn. He is a redshirt sophomore walk on long snapper/punter for the 2025 Clemson Tigers.
He was a “Multi-sport athlete who was a highly recruited baseball prospect … key contributor on Class 3A state title teams in 2020 and 2021 … recorded 45 tackles (3.0 for loss) at safety in 2021 … also added 10 pass breakups, two forced fumbles and an interception to earn all-region honors … punted 24 times in 14 games in 2021, including four downed inside the 10-yard line, to earn all-state punting recognition … two-time all-region selection at safety and punter … also long snapped, earning 2019 High School Blitz Long Snapper of the Year … played for Jeff Fruster at Daniel High School … originally committed to play baseball at TCU before instead electing to pursue both sports at Clemson … four-year varsity baseball player at Daniel who entered his senior season as one of the top-rated second basemen in the state … 2021 preseason high school baseball All-American … 2020 and 2021 Palmetto Games selection.”.
In 2022 he “Made collegiate debut vs. Louisiana Tech in his lone appearance of his redshirt season.”.
In 2023 he “Received a medical hardship waiver after missing the entire campaign with an injury.”.
In 2024 he “Appeared in three games as a reserve long snapper … made season debut vs. Appalachian State, serving as long snapper on Jack Smith’s fourth-quarter punt … also snapped vs. Virginia and The Citadel.”.
Brody is actually a member of Clemson’s baseball team too. He redshirted in 2023 and was on the team in 2025 but did not play. He did get some playing time in 2024 though. He “hit .333 with a run, homer, RBI, 1.333 slugging percentage and .333 on-base percentage in two games … hit a homer against Kennesaw State on Feb. 23 (2024) was his first career game and hit.”.
Brody is a Marketing major and a two-time ACC Honor Roll selection (2022-23). “His father, Mickey, is Clemson’s defensive pass game coordinator, co-special teams coordinator and safeties coach”. He is also the cousin of Chase Brice (Our former back up QB who saved our 2018 season when Trevor went down with an injury.).
