Agree? Disagree? Dabo's Toughest Coaching Job Yet?

I think the high expectations this team had and a new high-profile OC on board only raising the expectations: "This season will be Dabo's most challenging season yet"!
Agree?
Disagree?
*** This is mostly off the strength of "low expectations" in his early years! He got a pass then anyway as he had never been an HC. *** Even with the little run SCAR had; Clemson was finishing higher in the rankings most years. And, doing better in recruiting.
>~> This seems different because of the expectations around it and how early the season has gone South. This was the 1st season I ever remember hearing Clemson players actually talking about the National Championship being a goal. How will everyone respond? Will everyone still bust "behind" as if the team were undefeated? All those 5th and 6th-year folks who came back for more; keeping them engaged?
I've said it a bunch since the FSU game but it's worth repeating: "If you are all in on Clemson; it doesn't stop because they aren't in the NC hunt. It's all in all the time on Clemson football"!
Blessed to have seen 3 National Titles. Someone my age(50) has "N-E-V-E-R" seen their team win 1. Let's act like the class acts we are about this ya'll! Keeping in mind the: Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Purdue, Indiana, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, SCAR, North Carolina, Nancy Stank, Wake Forrest, Oregon, Oregon State, Arizona, Boise State, Miami(OH), Southern Miss, and many many more who are your age and have never won just one ring! We are still winning if you ask me; well ahead of the curve and it isn't close. Bama, Georgia, LSU, and Florida can lay claim to championships in the modern era. Fans my age of those teams can speak up - but the majority of CFB "WANT TO BE WHERE WE ARE"! Don't let anybody fool you!

I would say yes only second to his “interim” year when he was auditioning for the job.

Without a doubt. His biggest challenge may be holding this team together emotionally, both players and staff. You know they are all feeling it?

I think you're right. I don't understand why many of the posters on here are so down on the redundant posts by people's disappointment. The expectations for the season was set by Dabo and the players.
It's not fans that hate Clemson. It's just the disappointment. It's actually very positive to me to see posters lashing out. It tells me that most people thought, and think, this team is a great team. But now the goals are awash.
So yes, may be Dabo's hardest job to win this season. He says it himself right here.

Should’t be. Dabo takes the field most Saturdays with the more talented team. The tough coaching jobs are the programs that don’t recruit in the Top 10 every year , yet have to figure out how to beat a program with a enormous budget, staff, passionate fan base. That’s the coach that better know how to get the most out of his players

The Cole Stoudt year was pretty rough imo. He knew he had his guy but DW4 got hurt. They made chicken salad out of you know.
Id say that and the year Kyle Parker played with busted ribs and Billy Napier not having a clue.

The Billy Napier thing is what has me wondering what was Dabo thinking about when he placed all those inexperienced coaches as position coaches and Coordinators after he had already experienced the Billy Napier belly flop when he became our HC, head scratching for sure....

My unpopular opinion. Streeter was not that bad, but Dabo had an oppurtunity to make a splash and bring excite.ent back to the program. I had much more angst with execution, specifically from the QB. You can only gameplan so much if your qb can only be trusted to throw a curl, bubble, flat route, or on occasion a streak(never open due to lack of speed and high pointers at wr).
I am and was much more concerned with Goodwin. Im cool on Goodwin right now bc the defense is executing but if he gets blown out by ND again and UNC and Miami throw all over this defense i will be concerned again.
Napier was hired bc no reputable OC was going to coach under a guy that young and likely to be canned. Circumstances were a bit different imo.

I think the issue with Streeter went beyond game plan. I honestly felt he did a good job calling the game against UNC & UT once Cade started.
Maybe it was how he handled the QB situation (though, Dabo needs to take responsibility for that), maybe it was situational awareness, who knows. All I know is that:
DJ & Elliott = bad DJ & Streeter = bad
Maybe Dabo just wanted a change at both.

I think next year will be more of an expectation than this year, 2nd year with riley and cade and some good receivers on the way. 12 team playoff. if they dont win at least one playoff game next year it will put the final nail in my belief. I still think this years team can be very good but i expect next years to go very far, for me even from the outset with georgia in atlanta, even if we dominate them statistically but lose in a similar fashion to FSU will be a let down for me, i need to see some tangible big wins.

Even before this season I thought next season would be when we could put it together. Year 3 QB, year 2 OC, and some WRs who have matured plus some studs coming in.
That being said, a 2-2 start was not on my bingo card for this season. We are far and away better offensively than the last two seasons, but we lack the stat that matters most and that’s points. Whether someone wants to call it bad luck, poor execution, or coaching doesn’t matter… got to find a way to fix it and get momentum.

Expectations were a lot lower back then and he had a bit of a honeymoon period before he had to make his mark. The expectations now ratchet that pressure up considerably.

Dabo brought what's happening with this team on himself by hiring within all those position coaches with little to no experience. If he fixes that problem before it hurts him long term with recruiting, we will be just fine, but, it's a must that he addresses the predicament he put himself in the minute that this season is over.

Dabo made things hard on himself by hiring unqualified coaches and refusing to draw from a talent pool that his competitors do.

Recency bias......
Sep 27, 2023, 12:44 AM
|
|
2011: - new Soph QB with no previous starts; - new OC; - previous year went 6-7 and Tiger Nation is not happy; - previous National Champion is scheduled for game three; - and games 3-5 are all ranked teams; - Offensive playmakers were all new freshmen just arriving or underclassmen; - Defense was suspect overall
Much harder job in 2011 than this year. Holy smokes.

You are pointing out why I think this year is his toughest by listing all of that though. He was coming off a losing season in 2011 and nobody was talking National Championship.
"Different Expectations"!
Tough in terms of talent and where they were as players at the time, yes. I grant you that; but "with great expectations comes greater pressure to perform", right?

I think Dabo is facing the toughest coaching days. He is a bad ####, but he will be on an unequal playing field in recruiting. Therefore, everything that happens with the program will be through heart, loyalty, and vision. He has a lot more managing to do than he used to. His job had become harder.

2021 when half the team was hurt
Sep 27, 2023, 7:47 AM
|
|
DJ was hurt. His backup was hurt.
Justyn Ross got hurt. Shipley was the only playmaker when Ross went down.
Started 2-2 and still found a way to win 10.
Remember the expectations then? Even the media had us at pre-season #3.

Disagree...these were the lowest preseason expectations....

since 2015 preseason rankings.
I think most of the "high expectations" for this season from a lot of the fans' standpoint were misguided b/c they saw what they wanted to see. Sure, he fixed a couple problems at OC & QB, but real problems are still there..........hence the 2-2 start (0-2 ACC).
Dabo's biggest challenge is putting his pride aside and going ALL-IN to fix ALL the problem areas......not just a couple and expect drastically different results.......something he could've started doing 3 years ago, but didn't.

No , I don't think so. I think it's much more difficult to build a championship caliber program with staying power. That's what Dabo has built. He's done it the right way and not taken shortcuts like others ( you know who they are ).
To believe otherwise is to be affected by all the outside noise. Dabo and his teams are not because that's the way they're built.
That's one of the benefits of doing it his way. That's one of the purposes of going after guys of high character.
They rise above and meet the challenge. This team will to

brings its challenges.
I just hope that Dabo and the team handle the current adversity better than many folks on here are. I expect he will. 2021 got off to a similarly bad start, with similar fan and program expectations, and they regrouped and finished the season undefeated, which ultimately turned into the nation's longest winning streak through Game 8 last year.
Go Tigers.

I would argue that building the program to the national championship level is more difficult than dealing with the increased expectations of staying at that level.
For as much heartburn as this season has caused me, we’re really not too far off from an elite level. Some strategic portal adds in the off-season and hopefully no mass-exodus of players/recruits and we could easily be back in the mix again next year.
It may be philosophically harder for him with the NIL/Transfer changes, but building a championship level program from where TB left us, is exponentially harder.
