A very interesting and very depressing story on SI site

about the NIL. It's disturbing as it relates to any hope of college football becoming anything other than professional football on Saturdays. If it's not already there.

They could have stopped this immediately the same way

Augusta National stopped Casey whatever his name was from riding in a cart because he had a bad hip. They basically said, 'This is the PGA and OUR tournament. We require ALL golfers to walk. Good luck.". The NCAA could have said,"We are an amatuer athletic associattion. We have rules. If you want to be a pro, this is not the path for you. Good luck.". They are going to kill a sport that has allowed MANY young men, not just the ones that go on to the NFL, but many young men to become millionaires because they got an education and an INTRODUCTION to people they would never have met without a scholarship.

You must think the loudest people in the party are the patriots. The ones that don't go along with everything are RINOs. Disturbing.

The NCAA nor the Universities are directly paying players. The Supreme Court ruled, quite correctly (unanimously-btw), that neither institution has the right to deny student-athletes the right to make money outside of their obligations as student athletes. If someone wants to pay them to sign merch, star in a tv ad, or use their likeness in a game - they have an absolutely right to do so. Just like every other citizen of this country. There is no comparison to a professional sporting organization setting intra-competition rules. The NCAA has the absolute right to do so also.

The NCAA and member universities have the right…

To determine eligibility for their teams.
No issue with earning money but may lose eligibility.
If a person who is eligible or working for one organization performs services for another, the original eligibility or employment can be revoked.

No, they don’t. At least not in the sense that you mean. And you need to realize that this was agreed upon unanimously by a highly philosophically divided Supreme Court. If you disagree you’re simply wrong. You don’t have to like it but you’re wrong as matter of constitutional law:

I agree with you about the courts ruling. I do wonder if the NCAA institutions could have added sponsorship NIL (not individual autographs and memorabilia) as a contractual requirement for accepting their scholarship/stipend and incentivized it based on grades/graduation. This would have also allowed them to make scholarship 4 year agreements and offer expanded medical insurance.
I also think the NCAA should lay out plans for a 50/50 revenue split with student athletes. Meaning 50% of athletic revenue must be spent on the athletes including scholarships across sports, stipends, facilities, etc. Athletes should have a seat at the table with the school and NCAA to determine how revenue is spent.

I’ve always thought carte blanche, lifetime health care should be the first concern of any revenue generating athlete. But the pro unions show that as soon as they have a seat at the table all they really care about is percent of total revenue being paid out as salary. Which the agents quickly gobble up most of for top players. And pro football is absolutely the worst for player welfare, financially or health wise.

Okay, So, how many of these players, uhm, student athletes

would continue to receive NIL money in the amounts some of them are receiving, IF THEY DO NOT PARTICIPATE on athletic teams for said universities? My gut is telling me, that if we get to the point that there are only 30 teams or so,then the public interest is going to fade away and that will be the end of ALL college sports. Without football as the cash cow, there is nothing else. How long do you think Clemson fans will keep following Clemson,if say, DW, or Trevor, or Sammy,or Spiller, walks away after year one and shows up at Southern Cal,Bama,ND,TAMU for heaven's sake. If this stuff keeps up, most fans are gonna find a new hobby. Tennis may make a big comeback.

I don’t know why you think you have an argument with me. Trevor, DW et al should have been able to capitalize financially on their success while at Clemson. An NIL sponsor should not be able to induce them to play elsewhere. There are rules about this now. They aren’t being enforced. They’re gonna have to throw the book at the flagrant offenders. It’s the Wild West right now. You’re right that continuing as it is right now will completely erode interest in the game. It already has a fraction of the interest of the NFL and the playoffs and championship have declining veiwership. So the question is, are all the financial stakeholders in college football going to simply throw it all away so 4-5 teams can hoist a vanity trophy every year? Even the boosters that are trying desperately to buy one right now will quickly lose interest.

I don't know about all that now. I watch Clemson and go to Clemson sporting events because I am an alum and on top of that love Clemson University. I would go either way. NIL or a lack thereof wouldn't affect my decision

I can see Dabo and men of his Character and integrity walking away from the game. Then we are left with a Win at all cost coaches who don’t care weather players go to class or not.
The Bible states “ Money is the root of all Evil “ we are seeing greed at its worst in the world we live in today. It is really tragic and sad.
May God have mercy on us all!

the whole thing down as soon as California passed their law allowing players in their state to be compensated by telling the California schools they could not bring pro players to compete. UCLA, USC, and Stanford would have been left out in the cold without a conference and who would play them if players received more them allowed scholarship money.

It's a weird line that we have drawn

Lowering academic standards to an embarrassing level was cool, but now the players have been given freedom, and it is too much.
The sport we like is changing and there is less certainty than ever. It was perfect for fans and coaches. The NCAA had an opportunity but continued to punt. I'm just tired of the fake concern for players' "tax returns" and "divisions in the locker room". Everybody wants to have their cake and eat it too. Pretending it was a "pure" sport is a nice lie people like to tell themselves.

Tell us how it can be improved from what we have right now! That shouldn't be too hard.
For starters, just go back to transfers have to sit out a year! If Jordan Addison has to wait a year before being eligible at USC, he wouldn't be leaving Pitt! He would complete his year at Pitt, then turn pro.

People will point to the insane amounts of money involved in college football
May 2, 2022, 10:15 PM
|
|
today as the culprit. If conferences, teams, and coaches weren’t getting so rich off the players, then players wouldn’t feel entitled.
Okay, that’s true, but it doesn’t hit on the actual problem.
The ACTUAL problem is that at some point, college players were given athletic scholarships to an institution of higher learning just because they played a sport well. It had little to nothing to do with academics. That is where the problem started.
After that, once it was clear that these athletes were in a special category, all their own, other things started to change. They got their own special housing, athlete-friendly majors, tutors, clothes, etc. They got perks that regular students don’t get.
As college sports became popular on TV, universities and their fans decided that they were fine letting these guys into school even though many would never have gotten in on their own academic merit, because it’s fun having a good college sports team. Who doesn’t enjoy the notoriety and publicity it brings to their school?
Now, of course, we are at a point where athletes use college programs for coaching and exposure, and colleges use athletes for success and exposure. Both ultimately use the other because they can possibly make them money.
I don’t see either side ever choosing to put a stop to this system, because they are happy. Many fans are fine with this arrangement. The only way it will stop is if enough alums and fans decide that enough is enough and stop watching games on TV and stop buying tickets.

Thank you for heads up about article. Your sentiment is shared. Things stay the same? Within five years, Coach Swinney and Kathleen work at small Christian College and spend the rest of their days and money on even more focused, God-directed missions. Who knows? Does the revival start there?

Even a nut job could see this coming. Fat cats making money, getting paid off, smoking a cigar while their team beats yours using low income kids to accomplish their purpose. It’s always been a problem but in the past the NCAA has kept a little oversight. Yes they would look the other way for some(UNC CHEAT) and a few others but at least there were some controls. Why did Texas A&M hire the cheater Jimbo. Why did they spend 30 million Nil on this last recruiting class? Their oil tycoons want to win a Natty. What stupidity led to this moment. Operating with a limited budget and doing things the right way will not get you a championship in the future with this environment. How do you think Duke snd North Carolina built their BB brands? Money Money and more money. Here is hoping they will throw this system out the window and let kids go where they like coaches the environment and personal development include a first class education.

I am for eliminating Scholarship’s especially if kids are making more money than the value of a scholarship. Next the mascot’s will be want NIL deals, next will be the team manager’s and other staff that feel they bring value to the table.
It’s just sad for college Athletics, fans and schools to. Pandora’s box has been opened and now it will be if one for themselves.
Good old fashion greed!

If you must meet admission requirements of all students much of this non-sense would end. If the highest paid person at the University was the President ,the coaching non-sense$$ would stop. If that does not happen do not complain about anything else that happens to College sports.
