A True Hero

May 31, 2021, 11:01 AM

One of my close friends was a fighter pilot during WW2. He was shot down and was killed when his plane crashed. He was buried in France and his grave was maintained by residents of a nearby village. About two years after the end of the war, the family had his body returned to his home town. We met at the railroad station for his scheduled arrival. There was one honor guard on the train. The family asked me to also serve as an honor guard, one of the highest honors I have ever received. I'm not ashamed to admit I shed tears for two days.

My father's older brother was killed on the beach on D-Day and buried along with hundreds more on the soil above. My father went through some service that photographs the grave markers and treasured the sight of his brother's name on the cross.

God bless you Joe. Thank you and Clover for your service to this nation and to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. God be with their loved ones.

My great uncle served with General Patton. Marched with him from North Africa to Berlin. Didn’t come home until the war was won. He lost many good friends who’d become his family and really was never able to talk about it.
Also lost a great uncle on Utah Beach.

I was never with my entire company during the Korean War. We had 5 teams, each assigned to a division or other Army unit. All of our casualties occurred on the other teams. I was assigned to a Combat Engineering Company for about three months. They had lost several men but that was before I joined them.

I was fortunate to serve with SGT Forrest Greene in the late 60s. When my tour was over he was retiring, we came back to the states on the same plane.
Then was a big bonus to re-up and they also offered him another stripe. He said send me back to Korea and I will go. He liked it there.
