A lot of guys talking about Dabo's "commit policy".

Jun 16, 2012, 8:59 AM

What coach encourages a verbal commitment to continue looking around? I hear these people saying, "will Dabo stick to his policy for the #1 recruit?"

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure we've had commits visit other schools. I think it's obviously a strong recommendation that every coach in America would tell a kid that he hopes they shut it down.

So am I wrong in what I'm saying? Have we ever retracted a verbal due to them visiting a school? Please don't say Marlin Lane or McDonald because those situations were for other reasons. McDonald was involved with a handler and was hardly a D-1 prospect, and we remember Lane's issues. Are there other recruits or situations that I am forgetting?

I may be wrong, but I doubt Dabo would have pulled Lane's offer had Lane not been visiting other schools. Dabo makes a commitment to the kids that he plans to honor, and he expects the same from them. He tells them that up front. I doubt Dabo waivers anytime soon.

I find it hard to believe that Lane was the ONLY recruit who

ever visited another campus. That shocks me. I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm just saying that I'm shocked.

I'm not saying he is the ONLY recruit we ever had to visit another school, but Dabo sets the expectation up front that the commitment is just that - a commitment, like making a promise and giving your word. It means something to Dabo, and he expects it to mean something to his players. Question his coaching prowess or his interview responses if you want to, but his integrity is impeccable.

dabo may be a little more flexible with "elite" athletes, but when you are limited on spots and you have a list of 3 star guys a mile long to look at, you can say commit or be gone because there is another guy that wants your spot.

I really doubt Dabo is very flexible from one player to another, but I don't know his private conversations with recruits. I do know what he has said, and that is that he tells recruits up front not to commiit if they are not going to keep their promise. There is no ambiguity nor any room for misinterpretation.

well, someone from clemson offered mcdonald so someone

Jun 16, 2012, 9:08 AM

thought he was a d1 prospect, but yes, his handler has had other issues if i'm not mistaken.

lane's was not pulled for his drug bust apparently, but it made it real easy to part ways when he decided to visit tennessee on the weekend he was supposed to be coming to clemson. if he doesn't go to tennessee, he's a tiger now if nothing else changes before signing day.

the offensive lineman, prince, earlier in the year 'decommitted' after he let the staff know he was taking visits to unc. not sure who made the decision in the end to pull the commitment, but the decommitment came before he committed to unc.

don't know how many kids haven't pulled the trigger behind closed doors because dabo has told them how he feels about future visits only to make a commitment later or not at all.

the wr last year from sc flirted around too long and lost his opp to play at clemson because hopper jumped early and shunned other visits.

i'm sure there's more, but it's been well documented dabo's feeling on these kids commitments.

And its not Dabo's job to look after other schools commits or their policies on committing. Worry about #1 and let the rest take care of them selves.

"I bet Dabo doesn't pull his offer when/if Nkemdiche visits another school. Will Dabo be a man of his word?"

I just never knew that was actually Dabo's policy. Recommendation, yes.

Oh well, we've got a ton of help with the Grayson guys with their HS coach and all that anyway so hopefully we don't even have to talk about that.

talk cont crap about his commitment, say he's 'better than clowney', gives the finger to the entire sec because the young man pledged to clemson.

it's june 16th, 2012, signing day is february 6, 2013. i don't think i need to say, alabama, lsu, uga and the rest of d1 football won't go away until the young man inks his name.

it is going to be one york twitter rumor after the next about what this young man is doing, what people are hearing, what a friend of a friend of a friend heard.

nothing wrong with being excited or gratzing the young man, his teammates and the coaches, but act like you've been there because we have.

go tigers and let's fill out this class. great, great commitments this week on top of what the staff had in place.

looking forward to the rest of the summer and then the season.

I don't think Dabo's policy is much different from any other head coach's policy. NONE of them want their commits to visit other schools. However, each kid is different. Lane was laying it on a little thick, and I think Dabo got tired of it. On the other hand, you might be confident in another kids commit even when he visits other schools, so it's no big deal.

rj prince ring a bell?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

A lot of responses, but it doesn't look like your question

Jun 16, 2012, 12:21 PM

has been answered yet: " Have we ever retracted a verbal due to them visiting a school?"

I might add a little and word it a little more specifically:

1. Is it Dabo's policy that any recruit who commits is expected not to take any more visits?

2. If any commit takes a visit to another school, is our offer automatically withdrawn for that alone?

3. If the above rules apply, do they apply across the board, to every recruit, or are circumstances considered and exceptions made?

Obviously, every coach at every school would prefer that his commits shut down their recruiting and don't take anymore visits; but we know that lots of commits from other schools continue to take other visits, sometimes with us, but they don't lose their offer and the commitment remains; so Dabo's policy is very different from that of a lot, if not most coaches.
