I don't know why we have lightning delays. Did anyone ever get struck by lightning back in the day when we played through storms? I don't remember anyone ever getting struck. I don't remember any evacuated stadiums being struck since they started the delays.

Yes, football teams have been struck by lightning, sometimes with fatal results, such as the Gibbs High School tragedy in 1970 where two players were killed in their offensive huddle. Other incidents include a 2014 strike at a New Mexico middle school that hospitalized students and coaches, a 2004 incident in Texas where a high school team was hit, and a 1996 Indiana event where a strike injured several players and coaches. These events highlight the dangers of lightning on open fields and the importance of seeking shelter during thunderstorms.

Tragic Examples

Gibbs High School (1970):
Two players died and several others were injured when lightning struck their offensive huddle during a practice.
Decatur Central High School (1996):
A lightning strike sent several players and coaches to the ground during a practice, causing injuries and demonstrating the danger of ground currents.

Picacho Middle School (2014):
A lightning strike hit a nearby tree, sending several players and a coach to the ground and critically injuring a middle school student.

Grapeland, Texas (2004):
Twenty-eight high school students and two coaches were injured when lightning struck the field during practice.
