Been stuck working nights for about seven months now. I still haven’t gotten used to the schedule. I can usually sleep fine at first, but if the kids wake me up, it’s hard to go back. 2 or 3 out of six days working, I usually barely make that last hour. Brain is shot.
Also, some days, might be lucky to get one good meal in, others it’s like I can’t stop eating.
Family time and wife time is obviously the worst part.
It takes a while circadian rhythm change to get right. That's without daytime disturbance, like kids.
Third shift can be a bit easier on schedule if type good at extending your day. Start with a kids ballgame, go to work and be home to see them off.
Second shift is easier on me, but wouldn't work with children IMO. You'd miss a bunch time.
Also.... You're correct with eating. Third shift is probably the worst. I actually liked third fit a while, and would get Hardee's on the way home often.
Honestly, kids are likely the worst factor in your equation. That time you'll never get back.
I did 3rd shift in ER/CCU for 9 years when I was young. It’s awful! Never got used to it. Finally realized if I continued it would ruin my health. Started a business and said see you later to 3rd forever. Best decision of my life. Good luck. Hope you can adjust. I don’t think anyone ever adjusts though. I think over time they just forget what feeling normal was like.
