2018 vs today

Dec 31, 2022, 8:21 AM

After winning the natty in 2018, Clemson and Alabama were 1A and 1B.

Today, Clemson isn’t a top 5 program. We’ve been passed by Georgia, Michigan, and Ohio State. Alabama is also ahead of us.

Tennessee and Southern Cal have caught up to us.

Programs that are gaining ground on us: Florida State, South Carolina, Notre Dame.

Programs that could pass us soon: TCU, LSU, Utah, Oregon, Texas.

This is our reality. If nothing changes, Clemson will no longer be a top 10 program very soon.

I’d adjust that to already not a top 10 program. Otherwise agree.

We’re still a top 10 program. TCU, Tennessee and USC have to replicate their success this year. We’re hanging on by a thread though.

When you have a “down year” and finish in the top 10…

You’re a top 10 program.

(happened last year and maybe this year too)

There's something in these hills.

Problem is even in the ACC, teams like

Fl.State and Miami are catching up to us in talent on the field with the portal and NIL. Now Miami is still a dumpster fire but Fl. State is getting it together.

FSU should be the favorite to win the ACC next year.

Fortunately we have them at home.

Miami has freakish talent. They just can’t put it together. Still not worried about them yet.

Offensive line just has to get better .... considerably better. I have thought for years that it was O line coaching but it must be a lack of talent. Surely Dabo and his staff sees that the team is getting beaten when the ball is snapped. Maybe the portal has a solution!

I like Thomas Austin. I think he sees the issues with our offensive line.

Robbie signed mostly smaller linemen that could play multiple positions. We’ve always been undersized at OL. Austin is addressing that.

2023 signees -
Harris Sewell: 6’4, 300
Ian Reed: 6’6, 315
Zech Owens: 6’7, 365

2024 offers -
Kam Pringle: 6’7, 330
Daniel Calhoun: 6’6, 350
Josiah Thompson: 6’6, 280
Fletcher Westphal: 6’7, 305
Blake Frazier: 6’5, 260
Jameson Riggs: 6’5, 285
Blake Franks: 6’5, 310
Jordan Seaton: 6’5, 287

Being small you'd think they could pick up a blitzing LB

up the middle.

I am done with ex-Clemson players as coaches. I like what Austin is doing with recruiting, but they clearly were not ready last night.

Grisham and Spiller need to go. Steeter, well I think it's clear how bad he is.

Ultimately this is on Dabo. Let's hope he does the right thing this off-season.

On past teams elite skill talent hid the mediocre OL, but not this team. I think you're right that Austin is addressing it.

Spot on. Businesses (is anyone on this board under the delusion that college football is not a business?) evolve, improve, and expand……

OR DIE.

The only difference between 2018 and today is we don't have Trevor Lawrence, Tee Higgins, Travis Etienne and co. to bail us out. Even in those days, we could play like crap and sputter, but one of those guys would break a big play for a touchdown. We had talent that covered up a lot of flaws.

Recruiting evaluations and development have fallen off sharply.

It's not evaluations. The cold hard truth is that players who were coming here 5 or 6 years ago are going to different places now.

We are cycling out. The warning signs have been there for three years now. When we are no longer the favorite to win this pathetic football conference- and we won’t be next year- our run will be over.

We have a D2 coaching staff minus Dabo, Eason and maybe Hall. Dabo has gone from wanting the best staff on the planet to thinking he can coach all the players and the staff. I think Dabo forgot how he got to the top or got the big head and thought he could run any staff to the top.

I think Dabo needs to look in the mirror, do some soul searching and get his roots back to what led him to the TOP!

We won’t get anywhere with Streeter as our OC. I like him as an alumni but not as our OC. I think Dabo has too many assistants who are inexperienced. Streeter is one. Grisham is another.
