1st Time Clemson Game

Nov 4, 2016, 9:51 AM

Hi Everyone,

I am super excited to bring my 10 year old son up to Clemson for us to experience our first ever Clemson football game in person when they take on Pitt in two weeks. We are Pitt fans and have heard nothing but amazing things about the Clemson fans and the game day experience.

We are coming up from Atlanta and wanted to ask the experts any tips/advice to make sure we experience all that there is to offer. We have a Parking Pass for Lot C1 which seems pretty far from stadium. Anyone have an idea how far a walk that is to stadium?

Thanks in advance for your guidance and though I am not optimistic about our chances on the field, I am super optimistic that we'll have any amazing time.

Get there real early and leave early if the game is out of hand, or bring plenty of refreshments and patience.

I don't know exactly, but I would guess a 20-30 minute walk. You can take Perimeter Road or walk through campus. Make sure you take you kid to get a Clemson milkshake at the Hendrix Center if you walk through campus. All the ice cream is made and served by Ag students. Also, sure to get him a Clemson jersey before you leave! Hehe, enjoy and we are glad you are coming!

Thanks everyone for the kind words and tips. The ice cream sounds like a must do!

We'll hold off on the Clemson jersey for now :) Maybe in 8 years when he goes to college we can get a Watson throwback jersey.

Primantis was stop #1 when I flew up for the Pitt/Penn State game. Seeing those sandwiches and talking ice cream...I think I am due for an early lunch.

I was told that there is a shuttle before the game to the library which shortens your walk. No shuttle after the game though. Although the stadium is across campus from you, it will be a nice opportunity to see the beauty of the campus and let your son become a new Clemson fan. Have fun and be safe!

Welcome to Death Valley, truly a great place to watch a game. Here is a link to the parking map:

https://admin.xosn.com/pdf9/3696406.pdf?DB_OEM_ID=28500&

Lot C1 is lower right corner on the map, 10-15 minute walk. I would walk up Cherry Rd to Old Greenville Hwy (Hwy93). Go walk college ave on the way in. The walk up Cherry is right thru the middle of the campus and there will be tailgates all over the place on 93...

What to take in pregame?
- #1 thing get inside about 30 minutes prior to be in the seats 20 minutes for the pre game, military appreciation day should have some great pregame. Don't miss the run down the hill, seen it a hundred times and it never gets old.

- Tiger Walk is pretty cool, you can see the players up close out of uniform, it typically starts about two hours before kickoff in P-3 parking lot (IPTAY lot 5) when the team depart their buses and walk to the team entrance in the WestZone of Memorial Stadium.

here is a link to a fan guide put out by the Ath Dept... should help.
http://www.nmnathletics.com/fls/28500/pdf/athletics/2016-17/2016Clemsonfanguide.pdf?DB_OEM_ID=28500

Go to the ESSO club on your walk on hwy 93 (its at the corner of 93 and Oak just past the stadium) and buy your son an ESSO club hat, he will wear it with pride back in PA.... the place is one of the landmarks in Clemson.

Hope this helps and hope the experience matches the hype...

Military Appreciation Day is this weekend vs Syracuse.. Pitt game is Senior Day/Hall of fame day.

Either way, get there early and make sure you are in your seats 15 min before gametime to get the full hill experience.

Nov 4, 2016, 10:40 AM

the most beautiful campus in the world (I'm a bit biased). There may be a shuttle that will take you closer to the stadium. Take the time to walk around the campus and the downtown area immediately adjacent. Hit the '55 Exchange in the Hendrix Center for homemade ice cream, the amphitheater for band pep rally and then follow the band into Death Valley. There is also Tigerwalk a couple of hours before the game where the players enter the stadium.

The Tigers may become your son's second favorite team! Go Tigers and Steelers!

Bunch of info here....

Although this is for the Syracuse game, the Pitt game is also a 3:30 game and should be similar. You can always check the site next week for the Pitt Gameday Guide

Re: 1st Time Clemson Game

Nov 4, 2016, 10:52 AM

Welcome to Clemson!

There's always plenty to do on gameday.

C-1 is probably a 30 minute walk from the stadium, but you can walk up by Hendrix, and cut across campus to see campus, as well as a short-cut to core campus for food, or downtown and bowman field.

The radio shows broadcast from Doug Kingsmore Stadium (baseball stadium), sometimes they throw out free t-shirts.

Tiger Walk is in the West Endzone 2 hours and 10 minutes before the game starts where the team walks into the stadium with part of the band playing, the cheerleaders, and Central Spirit takes leads with the paw flag. I am the marketing director for Central Spirit, and will have some "Beat Syracuse" stickers before tiger walk as well (toward the street where the cheerleaders line up about 2 hours and 30 minuets before the game). Look for the group of people wearing orange overalls.

There is a parade from Fort Hill into the stadium with the cheerleaders and Tiger Band an hour before the game, the paw flag is there as well.

There are a lot of great shops downtown for any Clemson merchandise you can imagine, and Mr. Knickerbockers normally has Beat Syracuse stickers as well, although theres are a different design.

If you aren't tailgating, there are a couple of places to eat downtown, or Core Campus is open with a chicken place and a sub place, along with Starbucks. Core Campus is right up the hill from the East Endzone.

I'd also get to your seats 30 minutes before the game. I normally go in an hour early, but 30 min. should do. This will prevent you getting stuck in line and missing the team run down the hill, and if you only see one thing this weekend, it should be that!

Have fun this weekend!

Welcome to Tiger Town!

Do you live in Atlanta or flying in there?

If you like college marching bands, be sure to check out a pre-game mini concert by Tiger Band, the Band that Shakes the Southland. It is a good way to get into the spirit of the game. It takes place 90 minutes before kickoff (so 2 pm for 3:30 pm Pitt game). It takes place at the amphitheater in front of the Cooper Library reflection pond.

You can then follow the band as it parades down Fort Hill Street to the stadium.

If you like history, you can check out the Calhoun Mansion on Fort Hill Street in the middle of campus (across Fort Hill Street from core campus). It is the home of John C. Calhoun, former US Vice President, and the home of his daughter and her husband, Thomas Green Clemson. They give informative short tours.

I am originally from Western Pennsylvania. Still a big Steelers and Pirates fan.

Hope you enjoy your visit to Tiger Town.

Welcome to Clemson

Nov 4, 2016, 11:11 AM

I sure that you and your family will have an amazing time in Death Valley. Our game is a 3:30pm kickoff so the traffic will start getting bad at 9:30. Many folks will be setting up tailgates when the gates open at 7am to most lots. Let us know the area that you are planning to stay on Friday night and we can give you the best route to your lot. Don't be in any big rush to leave right after the game, either.

Clemson will have most of it facilities open all day. The newly renovated ($67mil) Littlejohn Coliseum and Doug Kingsmore baseball stadium are worth a walk through. You will see lots of tailgates everywhere and the friendliest fans that you will ever meet.

If you are lucky enough to have lower deck seats, be sure to walk out on to the field after the game. Clemson has a long standing tradition of inviting the fans onto the field to "meet at the paw". It is a chance to meet the players, get autographs, or a sweat band or glove. You can walk up the "hill" in the east endzone and rub the famous Howard's Rock underneath the scoreboard. It is a truly unique experience and one your son would never forget. (Fans are asked to enter the field from either endzone and not to jump over the sideline wall.) If your seats are in the "Top Deck North/South" you will have to exit the stadium and re-enter through a lower gate as there is no pathway between the decks. Also, they do not sell dipping dots in the upper decks. That luxury is reserved for lower deck fans only. (TigerNet inside joke.)

The is a clear bag policy at Death Valley, so tell the Mrs. to leave her pocket book, camera bag, binocular case, etc in the car.

Please take the opportunity to walk through our beautiful campus. The iconic Tillman Hall (clock tower) is on the NNE corner of campus, closest to the downtown area. I'll post a map of a few must see things a bit later. Right now, I'm packing to head up to Clemson in a few for the Syracuse game.

Re: 1st Time Clemson Game

Nov 4, 2016, 1:35 PM

Clemson is a great game day experience that you and your son should really enjoy.

Here is my advice for game day at Clemson.

Before the Game
First make sure you both get a good night sleep the night before. To truly get in the whole experiences you will have to come early and if the game is close the traffic out will make it late. Atlanta is roughly a two hour ride to Clemson. I would plan to leave about 8:00. You should miss most the traffic with that start time. I would walk through downtown and stop by TDs. It has been around for roughly 30 years and there are plenty of jerseys on the wall of the past players. I read other suggest a milkshake which is must do. Before the game wander through the tailgates. Make sure to wear your Pitt garb. Clemson fans love welcoming visiting fans. Feel free to stop by tailgates with TV if you want to catch up on scores.

Game Time
At least 30 minutes before head into the stadium. The pregame at Clemson is great. The excitement builds as the player get ready to run down the hill. Clemson is known for it's home field advantage so expect it to be loud. The halftime show is always fun but if you want to get out with your ten year old and let him run around Clemson allows pass out at halftime (I always did this with my boys growing up). At the end of the third quarter put your attention to the big screen. Clemson has a great video for the fourth quarter. Once the game ends go out on the field (lower deck only. Go meet the players and you will be able to meet the Pitt players also. When your ready to leave the game walk up the Hill and get a picture at the Rock.

After the Game
The traffic can be tough so take your time and wander the campus or go back through the tailgates. It looks like it will be a beautiful day so enjoy it.

I hope you enjoy your visit. I have been to 20 different college game day and Clemson is as good as any.

Thanks again everyone for all the great insight & tips. I was excited before but I am down right giddy now. My son really got into football last year and this will be his first "big" game experience (no offense to GT) and thinking I couldnt have picked a better place. I''ll definitely post after game. Can''t wait to soak it all in.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: 1st Time Clemson Game

Nov 4, 2016, 5:01 PM

Enjoy your visit. After Clemson wins the game ;) make sure you take your son out on the field. May be a chance for him to meet some of the players and get some autographs (besides it's generally just a cool thing to do). If your seats are in the upper deck you have to leave the stadium and come back in to get to the lower bowl (there is no connection between the upper and lower sections).

C1 is a ways away from the stadium but there will be lots of people making the trek from there. I would be walking by at least an hour before game time to make sure you are at the stadium in time for the pregame stuff. With it being senior day the pregame is a bit different than normal though.

Re: 1st Time Clemson Game

Nov 4, 2016, 6:27 PM

This whole thread is why I love and miss Clemson. Clemson Ice Cream, definitely get some. Tillman Hall, Bowman, then downtown all a must. Then weave through the tailgates toward the stadium ... follow the noise and the sea of orange.

Enjoy! Some of my fondest memories are with my Dad at Clemson games

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We park in Lot2, but had to use C1 last year

Nov 4, 2016, 9:31 PM

They shuttle to the library before the game, but no shuttle after. It's not a terrible walk, outside of the hill.. um outisde of 'The Hill'.. that one will wear you out.

Welcome to Death Valley as always, and we are glad you're here! You're always welcome.. Just don't wear coot gear.It might get rough then.

Oh yeah, bring earplugs. Auburn, Bama, and the rest of the SEC may think their stadium is loud.. but nothing beats CLEMSON loud.
