What are your thoughts about the GM being let go?

Gettleman seemed to be given a salary cap nightmare by

Jul 17, 2017, 2:04 PM

Herny. I thought he did a pretty good job of managing the financial aspeccts of the team. And the draft picks under him seemed to be solid as well, so I am suprised.

BTW, I am not really a Panthers fan but since I live in Belmont NC, I follow them a bit.

I never liked the handling of DeAngelo Williams release

or the Steve Smith release. I thought those were franchise guys that were let go simply as a business decision. I initially thought it came down to personality and the culture of the program changing to value youth and beginning a new generation of players, but it seems now that Gettleman didn't value anyone in the franchise. You have to draw a line between the business of roster management and the guys who are fan favorites. I read an article on the panthers website that documented failed extension talks with the Greg Olsen and Thomas Davis camps that completely fell flat. It seems that he failed to recognize that there are certain players that you can't let go and expect to keep your job.

It could also be because both those guys were #####

I've met both and would not want to meet them again. Steve was just rude, but DeAngelo nearly assaulted a minor.

I've met Steve several times, and he's always been nothing but nice to me. Must depend on the situation.

I too met Steve wandering the campus of Wofford @ training

camp back in like 2005 and he was a class act. He signed my football and was extremely friendly.

While they both had egos, they certainly didn't detract from

the team like some players, ahem, Cam Newton. Steve is a feisty future H.O.F. player and DeAngelo is the franchise record holder as a rusher.

One of the dumber moves in franchise history. Gettlemen was smart enough to not hand out big contracts to mediocre runningbacks (DeAngelo) and older players that wanted to get paid based off prior productions not current. I'm sure they'll overpay Olson (32) and TD (34) putting the Panthers back in Salary Cap hell when they are committing big money to a 34 and 36 year old TD\Olson that cant play any more. He was also pretty good in the draft and picking up players in the bargain free agent bin.

100% correct

Thomas Davis and Greg olson seem like great guys, and Im sure they both have a very positive presence in the locker room and leadership role with this roster. But given TDs history of injuries, the LB's they have on the roster, and other team needs, and Greg Olsons age and current contract terms, there is no reason at all to renegotiate these two contracts right now. As a fan, I can live with this bc I do keep up pretty closely with the organization and both guys probably fall under the "rare exception that may be worth making a poor business decision just to keep them happy" - MAY, if there is such a thing, but as a general rule making blatant poor business decisions to appease fans and players at the end of their careers, and firing gettleman and (or maybe "in order to") renegotiate these contracts this offseason is a terrible idea. If Jerry walked into his office and said "I want you to resign these two guys" and then left him to handle all other decisions then that would be palatable, but making two bad decisions and firing the guy for not being a "yes" man will probably be a disaster in the long run.

I believe both Olsen and Davis are deserving of the money they are asking for. You are right about the injury history of TD but do the last 5yrs of pro bowl level, healthy football not convince you? Have to remember he saved about 3yrs of wear and tear on his body from not hitting anyone during those 3 ACL injuries. And for Greg Olsen, what other NFL tight end has posted 3 straight 1,000yd seasons? None. So they are both very deserving. Myself being a huge panthers fan, I'm pleased to see Gettleman go. What was he thinking after a Super Bowl appearance to completely revamp the secondary and have strictly rookies in their playing corners? It is a business, yes but the man wrongly let Steve Smith walk and for that reason I would never come around to like Gettleman.

Re: 100% correct

I guess I should have clarified - Im more concerned about firing Gettleman than I am about possibly renegotiating 58 and 88s contracts, however:
1. Olsen and TD are under contract through this year, and Olsen through next season also.
2. Although no one knows, it appears not prioritising the renegotiation of both contracts had created a significant rift between the veteran players, and the Panthers front office
3. As a result, JR decided to fire Gettleman and most likely look for an interim GM to carry out his contract restructuring with these two vets, and keep cohesiveness in training camp and in the locker room going into next year. Of course, there is a chance someone would pay Olsen if this was something that created too big a rift and Olsen made it personal, but at face value thats a risk you typically take with a 37 yr old vet. Also, "not making them a priority" is hardly the same as "not open to resigning at the appropriate time after other spots had been addressed."

Graham Gano lost a couple games for us last year, and the absence of Michael Oher, Luke Kuechly, and Kelvin Benjamin's very poor showing were all much worse than Norman not being around IMO. Norman didnt exactly light the world on fire for the skins last year.

Disagree...

Jul 17, 2017, 6:46 PM [ in reply to 100% correct ]

Greg and TD are absolutely deserving of big extensions, despite their age, and the numbers back it up. Both of those guys have made consecutive pro bowls. TD has overcome multitudinous injury to become one of the best LBs in the league in a career resurgence that is remarkable. His production over the past couple of years is enough grounds to justify an extension alone. Take that and combine it with his exceptional value to the fanbase and the community, you just have to pay the guy to let him retire a panther.

Greg is a bona fide top 3 tight end in the NFL. He has led the panthers in receiving for the past 3 yrs and is the most dependable and consistent target in the passing game. Look at his fantasy numbers... he is a top 3 TE and he doesn't get hurt for half the season like Gronk does.
