This is a Big10 approach to defense and that is why Coach Allen was hired. Last year, 7 of the top 12 lowest rushing yards per game teams were Big10 teams, including Penn State at 9th, and hopefully, we will move in that direction this year. Offense may sell tickets but Defense wins.

This is exciting for me to hear. More like Jimmy Greenbeens and better approach than Pillsbury Doughboy.

That's amazing that it takes a new guy to recognize this. What were the coaches looking at last year? Or not looking at? Is this hard to see? I'm not a coach so all credit to them for knowing what to do to fix this. But we were paying a LOT of money for fundamental errors? Can we get a refund?
So happy we are fixing it
Go Tigers

There wasn't any part of hard to see, it was more about some of our fans choosing to turn a blind eye bc they didn't won't to hear most of what was being said about Dabo's choice for replacing Brent Venables...

Easy to coach from the stands and Monday-morning QB.
NO blind eyes. Many saw it. Had to give WG a chance once Dabo put him in the role.

I agree. Can't fault Dabo for giving Wes a chance. It's not like Wes didn't know anything. Wes just couldn't take it from his head to the field. Great analyst. Dabo accepted responsibility for putting him in the position and self admitted that he failed Wes. Same with the other coaches.
Just excited for the future and I hope all our coordinators and coaches aren't in a hurry to move on. Go Tigers. Spot the ball.

UGA exploited Clemson around the edge a few times in the first half, and then obviously talked about it and decided to abuse Clemson around the edge repeatedly in the 2nd half. At the time, I said that UGA just laid the blueprint for opposing offenses the rest of the season. And the decent opponent-OCs grabbed the blueprint and exploited it. All the money being thrown at these coaches and they couldn't fix what was obvious from Game-1. It's not like we didn't have good defensive player-talent on the outside.

I have laughed my butt off reading what Tom Allen said about the problems with our defense bc I can't count the times that I said from day one that Wes Goodwin wasn't what we needed as a DC. I would come back a day or so later to see the responses from T-Netters about what I had to say about Goodwin and his inexperience as a coach and DC. I would have 2,3,4 TDs with some advising me with pleasantries of what I could/should do...

You are probably right.. I started my tigernet account during the start of last season and got smashed for stating some obvious observations about our Defense and some coaching issues at the time.. I guess sometimes it's hard to accept statements about the things that were causing our Defense to collapse... Some fans/alumni would start calling someone a coot or would tried to use a term as bandwagon fan to down grade the remarks. We are all passionate for our Tigers and sometimes we don't want to hear or see the negative remarks, no matter how much truth it speaks.... Go Tigers!

yea I do not recall you talking about setting the edge and gap integrity, did I just miss that? From what have read so far, he is attacking tackling; which was abysmal last year, especially the secondary. Now maintaining the edge and gap integrity/attack angles.... that covers the line and linebackers... look forward to his thoughts on the secondary... unless of course you already posted that a number of times.

Before we all jump on board with Tom Allen, let's at least wait and see if his expertise is what we needed to match the talent level that we have on our D...

Usually due to bad scheme. Sometimes due to players messing up mentally. But too often ends didn't set edge, or LBs were sent way back to safety depth and couldn't affect the run effectively. So glad this coach has identified the problem and is working to fix it.

The constant base zone and playing way off the line was the biggest issue to me. We were use to seeing guys flying around the ball and gang tackling at every point of attack, it was just the complete opposite, it was always guys playing on their heels waiting for the player to come to them rather than attacking the line of scrimmage. Gotta get back to playing with our heads on fire.

Yeah, it's like he said too, he watched the practice tapes as well and guys weren't practicing right and basically not enough desire. This is the same thing a few past players have said too. It's also (imo) the major reason we had so many defensive decommits last year. One or two, you might could write off as nil. Not 5, and that doesn't include the ones we recruited that never committed. The elite recruits do their homework so to speak.
Yeah, no reason we won't be much improved. We have a solid foundation of talent this year and now he's put All the coaches on notice on what he expects from practice. Thinking we're all going to enjoy this ride.

I think Wes had good big picture vision
Mar 7, 2025, 8:28 AM
|
|
but the little things started to suffer. Execution being the main thing. Gap integrity, maintaining contain, tackling, etc… fell off last year. Maybe in Wes’ structure those details were left up to position coaches (problem is he was one), but the buck stops with the DC regardless if the job isn’t getting done. I think coach Allen nailed it when he eluded to players needing to know what they are supposed to do when they get where they are going. You can draw it up perfectly on paper, but the work doesn’t end there. A confident D is a successful D.

You cannot expect an inexperienced person to take over a job that an experienced top performing employee had been doing and think you are going to get the same results. That's just stupid. And that's what Dabo has done with many of these coaches who have never coached above the pop warner level.
It's obvious the family and friends coaching carousel needs to stop and coaches with big boy team coaching experience need to be who gets the job. Allen, Luke, and Riley are good starts.

Yea I believe he could have came to TNet and we could have told him most of this. Run D was horrible. Amazing we played as well as we did against a good Texas team. The offense did play good minus the no score at the goal line, but their dang RB went wild. Contain him I believe we win. Contain SC’s QB and we win buy double digits imo. Hate not winning the LOS. It usually tells the story.

Although it may be some truths in what Allen is saying, this message of blaming the defensive staff or somehow inferring they forgot how to coach is irresponsible. The real root of the problem is Dabo made a bad decision by giving 2 unqualified people the opportunity as DC over more qualified coaches in Reed, Eason and Rumph. If Dabo had any integrity he'd wouldn't allow this message of blaming Reed, Eason and Rumph to get started. If Reed, Eason and Rumph really were that much of the problem why didn't Dabo replace them? Because he knew each of them would have a job elsewhere before he could say " your fired ". Dabo should instruct Allen to just speak about the things that need to be done to address the run defense (tackling, DE's setting the edge, LBs and Safeties taking better angles). Any issues with coaching should be addressed privately. Not sure what Dabo expected out of Reed, Eason and Rumph. Maybe Reed, Eason and Rumph saw Wes and Conn make mistakes and said nothing, what did he expect them to say? All they did was obey the 1st rule of the 48 laws of power...never outshine your boss. I guess from their perspective they figured Dabo selected Wes and Conn as DC's...so let them lead. I really wish Dabo acted with some integrity and face reporters and just own up to his mistake of hiring Wes and Conn. That's what a good leader does instead of blaming others. In the military leadership classes i learned " Success has a million fathers, failure is an orphan. " I find it very easy for the head coach to blame the defensive staff instead of taking accountability of his stupid hiring decision. But then again I guess everything is always as simple as black and white.

Sound defensive techniques, gap coverage and identification of offensive scheming is what we have lacked the last few years . Now we have a coach that has the mental acumen to make the right calls and hopefully in game adjustments. The future looks bright for our defense going forward.
