"Danny Ford never lost games he wasn't supposed to"

Article A: I was looking at an old 1988 football program in a Clemson facility today. In 1987 we were 7-0 and playing 2-4 NC State at home. We went down 30-0 at halftime!! 30-0!! We came all the way back to make it 30-28 but eventually lost by that score.
what the heck happened? Anyone who was at that game tell me.

You are kidding, right? Danny Ford lost lots of games he wasn't supposed to lose. Problem is, in the 25 years that have passed since he was at Clemson, we have forgetten most of the bad stuff and concentrated on the National Championship. I was in school back then and there were plenty of frustrations with the football team. I will always be grateful to Danny Ford for his contribution to Clemson University. But lets be honest and admit he was every bit as human as Dabo Swinney, or any other coach we've ever had. "And" he left us in a mess with the NCAA (whether or not he was actually the one who committed the infractions). The Clemson football program is being built up today as surely it was in Danny Ford's early days. Great things are in store in the near future. So give credit where credit is due, but don't idolize Danny Ford. He's got plenty of freckles and warts just like the rest of us. Go Tigers!

games he coached at Clemson home and away. He lost the aforementioned NC State game and the 1989 game at Duke and they were bad losses; however, most of the other losses were not "shockers". If you want to talk about big wins against the big name schools and coaches, it would take a good while. He was simply the best coach Clemson ever had and I think the winning percentage will back that up (unless they were only here a short time). Darkest day in Clemson history was his departure. Also, check out the bowl record and the record agains that school in the midlands of this state.

was a great coach, but we lost more than a couple of games we weren't supposed to.
Let''s see
Lost 34-17 to a bad Duke team in 1980 at our Homecoming game. Lost three straight to lesser NC State teams, 3-27 in 1986, 28-30 in 1987, and 3-10 in 1988. Lost to several bad teams in 1985 on our way to a 6-5 record, same thing and same record in 1980.
Lost to GaTech in 1984 after they had lost 14 games in a row to Div 1 teams.
I was on the field after the win over Nebraska in Miami, there when we beat Oklahoma, WVU, and Penn State, but I was also there when we lost all those games we shouldn't have. You can add the Duke and Ga Tech games in his last year in 1989.
I was/am a huge Danny Ford fan, but the reality of the ACC in Danny's era was, beat UNC and Maryland and you win the ACC. Danny usually did that, but he stumbled more than a couple of times against lesser Duke, NC State, and Ga Tech teams.

#### Sheridan had Danny's number back then. At the 87 game I was in the stands with my father and his new wife, she from an NCSt family.
Everything went wrong in the first half, so Danny had our option QB Rodney Williams come out passing in the 2nd half. We had nothing to lose because we were so far behind. Rodney threw over 50 passes that day, more than he had thrown in the first 8 games. We had the ball inside the 50 with a minute to go and down by 2.Rodney made a great pass that would have given us a first down around the 30 with a great kicker in Gardocki. On the pass there was an obvious pass interference call that was missed on 3rd down, so we were on the 40 yard line and just out of Chris's range and gave up the ball on downs with under a minute left. Really sucked losing to them, reminded me of our loss last year after starting 8-0.

The first year or two there is no real effect, there is a lag. That is what I was getting at. Those 3 down years were a result of probation.

That was certainly one of them.
Had to open up the passing game (which was like running a trick play under Ford) in the 2nd half. Almost pulled it off.

Danny Ford and Beamer are pretty similar
Oct 30, 2012, 4:39 PM
|

They both always lost 1-2 games they shouldn't have.
NCST was Danny's nemesis. They had a good D back then and we usually had a bad offense.
Then there was the whole Spurrier Duke yr.

But he was 29-0 against Virginia!!! Until Hatfield came in and lost in Year 1.... Hatfield, what a joke... anyone on this board could have coached that talent to 10-2 consecutive years.... Then the True Coaching came out, 5-6... Ahhhh.... Serenity now.... Serenity now.... mmmmmmm... OK... Now I realize we are in 2012 with a Great Coach running the show!!! I'm back...

Not to take up for Hatfield, but the Virginia team of 1990 was probably their best ever. Danny may have had a hard time beating them that year also.

20's Hell! Danny wouldn't pass until he crossed his own 40. To his credit he won alot of games that way. The best compliment I ever heard anyone pay Clemson under Ford came from a Southwest Conference fan. He said " I'll say one thing about Clemson, you are good at what you do! That says it all right there about Danny Ford.

field. Rodney Williams was an option QB but that game he threw all 2nd half. We caught up 30-28 and got the ball back and then on a drive to go ahead we fumbled or got intercepted--can't remember. It was not the worst loss though. We also went to Cooterville and got pounded.

You are correct....think Rodney set the record for most passing attempts in a game(50+). We actually got the ball back around midfield and on third down and short, Tracy Johnson dropped a pass wide open that would have easily put us in field goal posistion.

I think Rodney's pass on 3rd or 4th down hit the umpire.
And I've heard (maybe from JoeCobb) that, when Danny went into the locker room at halftime down 30-0, he looked at the players a bit, then just said with a grin, "I guess we're going to have to pass."

1st half and our over aggressive defense got burned over and over. It was fall break and I left at half time (the only CU game I ever left early for) I listened on the radio. We made adjustments and shut them down. I believe we either missed a fg or onside kick near the end that would have won the game.

Danny Sheridan?
Oct 30, 2012, 5:31 PM

I believe it was #### Sheridan.
Sheridan coached at Furman before NC St. and circled the Clemson game every year. I believe they won 3 in a row. Clemson also had a couple down years in mid 80s, where NC St. took advantage.
Danny’s teams did try to sleep walk through some of the weaker games, but they always came to play in the big games. Look at his bowl record and who they beat!

From what I've heard about Danny's teams (I would a youngster around the end of his career), they would hit you in the mouth.
The knock on the modern Clemson teams has been that they weren't very physical and fold if you hit them in the mouth hard enough...just as much as it is about losing games we're not supposed to.
I think the knock in a lot of Clemson losses over the years is that they just come out and get manhandled against inferior, weaker, less talented teams.
Shoot --- do you remember the Wofford game last year? Their 250 lb lineman mauled ours on both sides of the ball in the 1st half. I'm glad we got it together, because that was looking like App State-Michigan waiting to happen.

You kind of have to factor in the other 2 years in order to get an accurate average, though right?
It was more like 1 loss to unranked opponents some years, 2 losses to unranked opponents other years.
And that's not even accounting for the fact that an unranked team could be favored....and thus Clemson wasn't necessarily "supposed to beat" them.

Hard to go back and see who was truly favored in every case,
Oct 30, 2012, 8:33 PM
|
|
but you can get a pretty good idea.
We lost or tied 7 games in which we were ranked and our opponent was not.
We lost 6 other games in which we were ranked higher than our opponent.
We lost 4 other games to teams that wound up with a losing record, games in which I'm sure we would have been favored.
The point remains, that we still had plenty of frustrating losses, games we were "supposed" to win that we didn't.
The 80s WERE a great time for Clemson football. ####, I was in my 20s, so they were better than now for me in several ways, but in both cases, I probably glorify the good while minimizing the bad. I think we all do.

I think his winning percentage was in top 5-7 among active coaches. His players not only went on to the NFL, but many also made Pro-Bowl
Danny leaving was one of the STUPIDEST decisions—PERIOD By both the Adminstration & Danny
Those that disagree deserve the Hatfield, West & Bowden years. They always want Bobby Bowden anyway. Even though Clemson was better than FSU at that time. Just look at both 88 & 89 games.
Even the game we lost, it was evident who the better team was. Punt return by Deon & the punt—rooskie
The biggest beneficiary of Danny’s departure was Bobby Bowden. Free ride through the schedule + our recruits started leaving for FSU.
With that said, I love our current coaches. But, would love to see that toughness again

COLLEGE FOOTBALL; Duke Rallies to Stun Clemson By BARRY JACOBS, Special to The New York Times Published: October 01, 1989 Just a week ago, after watching a rout of his Duke squad, Coach Steve Spurrier pronounced his team's chances of victory in the coming game against Clemson as one in a million. Today, that most improbable triumph came to pass, as the Blue Devils defeated the previously unbeaten Tigers, 21-17.

Duke was a good team that year. And we were playing in soggy Durham.
GT sucked and hadn't won a I-A game in over a year. It was at home. On Homecoming. (Of course GT didn't lose another game for about two years.)

Not true. I was in Durham when we were playing Duke, a team we should have beaten, when Danny played not to lose instead of playing to win, and let Duke beat us. That team in 1989 was a better team than our national championship one. Sat in pouring rain to watch that one.

20 teams and great in bowl games against very good teams. 5-5-1 against UGa during the height of their program.
Yes, Ford lost some he should not have, but anyone that thinks Dabo is even remotely Danny Ford needs to see a shrink.

I'll say this: there are two people directly responsible

for Clemson's ability to garner attention from the national media and other coaches: Frank Howard and Danny Ford. Howard due to his longevity, personality and reasonable success in the 40's and 50's. And Ford due to his outstanding success, including defeats of some of the nation's top programs...Ohio State, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Penn State, Stanford. Ford in my opinion was primarily responsible for our attitude of "expecting" to win games...even against other powerhouses. That needs to be our attitude now...to expect to win, rather than "hoping" simply because we aren't sure which Clemson team will show. And I really hope Dabo will be the coach to take us back to that attitude during the Ford years.

Wrong, I remember games against NC State, GT, and Duke where we were heavy favorites and lost.

Well you see the game of football is comprised of 2 teams playing a game for 60 minutes. The game is divided into 2 halves. Each half is divided into 2 quaters. So you take all the points scored at any time during the game and you add them all together. So if one team scores 30 points in the first half and none in the second half their total is 30. If the other scores 0 in the first half and 28 in the second half their total is 28. 30 is more than 28 therfore the team with 30 wins the football game. That is exactly what happened in the football game between Clemson and NC State in 1988. And you see the moral of the story is you have to play the whole game.

Please forgive me in my explanation of the events and how fotball works I stated the year as 1988 and actually I was speaking of the game played in 1987. However the same rules apllied in 1988 and they still do today!

Just came out really flat and got behind..(long)

Just started airing it out in the 2nd half and relied on superior athleticism to get back in it. Rodney Williams, our strictly-option QB, set a then-Ncaa-record by attempting 42 passes in the 2nd half. We also failed on 2 2-point conversions after our last 2 scores I believe.. ( Other old-timers fact-check me on that one!) My cousin was a walk-on and said when they went into the lockerroom at halftime they thought Danny was going to just cuss everybody out.. He said the assistants were screaming and yelling and Danny just came in and calmly told them all to be quiet. Said he then took the chalk and calmy told the team if they would listen up and trust the coaches that we were going to win.. Its sTill about the most exciting 2nd half of football at DV I ever saw because seeing us throw that much was just so uncharacteristic and the crowd was just going nuts as we crept closer.
