Is this season worse than that year ??
Dabo will not be fired regardless how this season ends up, but I was in school in 1998 and this season feels like this with the loss to Duke.

It is worse because of the pre-season expectations…

And this is worse because of the talent on this team compared to '98

Guy tried to argue with me on another post that 98 was worse and I said the same thing. I asked sarcastically " what was that team ranked at the beginning of the year"?

Depends on how you look at it. If we are talking from a purely suck football team, ‘98 was worse. I sat through all of those home games. We were BAD. This team is better than that team. From an expectations standpoint, this season is hands down worse.

1998 was the climax of a really bad era in Clemson football.

A 2x Natty Champ HC and loaded roster should not even be in the conversation of only 3 to 4 wins.

That was my Junior year. At least we beat the Coots. Not sure we will this year.

West had guys dealing drugs, his top recruits could not qualify, and was trying to move the program away from the 23 package into a pass-oriented team. The team was an absolute mess. Despite having 6 players on defense drafted, we got run out of the stadium by Maryland, FSU, and VT.

Reggie Herring would be a good addition to this staff..... In 1998, we had some studs on defense.

I still have nightmares of the VT game, Shyrone Stitt was running roughshod over our defense, and our fat, slow OLine got schooled by Beamer's twists and stunts; it dang near killed Streeter.. And the Rumors that the O-line showed up to the Gator Bowl game the year prior were true. Probably the best thing West did for the program was land Woody Danzler.
I remember Bowden running off half the o-line and making us respectable in '99 was a bright spot, but the Cow bells from the Peach Bowl are still ringing in my ears. I think some of the younger fans do not get it, there are ebbs and flows. We have a great head coach, and he is still in his prime.

You may want to double check that reference to getting beaten by UMd in 1998. I sat in the stands through that miserable 1998 season and I can confirm that we not only beat Maryland, we shut them out (23-0). Maryland, Furman and SC were the only wins in 1998 so it was pretty easy to keep track of them.
By the way, this team may be worse than the one in 1998. Woody Danztler, Brandon Streeter, Travis Zachery and Rod Gardner were guys on offense that year who would return and we had six defensive players on that team drafted the following April. All of our offensive production leaves after this year and despite big names on defense leaving this year (Woods, Parker, Terrell, Capehart, Woodaz, Lucas, etc.) I'd be shocked to see six of our starting 11 on defense getting drafted in April based on these performances.
However bad we were before Dabo got here, we're as bad again if not worse.

You are correct. We still go embarrassed that year more than once.
