Question for all you AD's out there....

let's consider a worst-case scenario... Clemson gets stuck in the ACC until 2036, with deficits of $30M annually compared to the B1G and SEC. How would this play out in our athletic department? Would football be ~ OK, but other sports suffer mightily? Would we cut some of the men's programs because of the deficit?
Only replies from knowledgeable individuals will be considered.

Based on the trend line analysis (thank you, by the way) we will have a $30M annual deficit (comparatively) in 2029. How much will that deficit be in 2036? I am assuming the SEC and B10 are going to negotiate even higher contracts for 2030 and beyond while we wait out the GOR deal.

Both conferences actually get to re-visit their deals twice within that timeframe.....so the gap will probably be much larger. That's a fact.

Other sports will definitely suffer. I think club sports will be the first to go, then intramurals.

When you receive $35-40 million a year and sell out an 80,000 seat stadium, you are not running a deficit. Do not buy the idea that we are at a disadvantage.

Nobody said we are running at a deficit. But we will be tens of millions behind our competition annually. How is that not clear?

Seriously cutigerbob®, I do not project Dabo and his staff of friends & colleagues to stay at Clemson when top SEC/B1G head coaches are earning $20M plus per year and asst coach salaries and player NIL payments are also half of SEC/B1G. Dabo will stash that money in his coffers and generously donate to his church and selected charities in dollar amounts that would not be feasible at Clemson.

a sizable loan AND hire a private equity firm to re-arrange the finances, then eventually file Bankruptcy and the tax payers can foot the bill. By then we will have several new stadiums and a 25 story glass dorm for the Football team

By 2036 it's not going to matter because all the top tier High School players will have collected their NIL money since Junior High School and all be fat, dumb and lazy with no desire to sacrifice in college.
It will be about which college HC can take the 2 and 3 star players and make them All-Americans.

be severely diminished by then, in that scenario. The question would then become, "What's NEXT?"
I don't even PRETEND to know what the conference landscape will look like in 2036. But the bad news is, given my family medical history, I probably won't be around to see it anyway.

I'm no AD, but I will tell you what ...

.... the position of the AD at FSU said.
(Close paraphrase) "It is impossible for us to be competitive at the highest level with a 30 million dollar, and increasing ever year, annual deficit."
My interpretation: We either get out of the ACC, and do so quickly, or we accept the fact that we will not be competing for national championships within the next few years. We will be, at best, a group of five level school.
So, it's not a matter of cutting programs and figuring out how to compete. That is not an option. There are two options: 1. Get out of ACC and join SEC or B1G. 2. Become a school competing with East Carolina, South Florida and Old Dominion.

I think wimminz mud wrestling in Death Valley would almost immediately wipe out this deficit you speak of. This is a very sirius reply and has been presented to our Bored of Trustees. I have filed for a copyright, so please do not try to take credit. My crack lawyer, DSP, will defend vigorously.....or something vigorously.
