The youngster caught lightning in a bottle at TCU - a middling little B12 school whose fanbase shows up in the 2nd quarter, nabs a selfie then heads to Neiman's middle of the 3rd.
But changing the trajectory of a real live blue blood program like Clemson will be a much, much taller task.
Im the chief Just win, baby advocate but even I have to admit: I dont think anyone's up to what Riley's expected to do.
The honeymoon will end right quick if he doesnt appease the breathlessDabo can do NO wrong crowd which will transform quickly into the pitchfork and torches mob if/when hefails to deliver immediate results.
It's PR. Dabo had to make a move. He had to stir the soup to get the skin off the top. We'll see if Riley's the right spoon.
I doubt he is - aint an OC in Murica who can quickly fix what Dabo broke.
In other words, I hope y'all will give the boy time.

I don't completely agree with your post but can appreciate the use the word pitchfork since Clemson's history goes back to a man known for threatening people with his pitchfork and he once cursed UofSC by driving his pitchfork into the ground there.

I have served on several search committees throughout the years, including coaches. I have served on college committees searching for faculty members, deans, coaches, and even presidents. I have served on search committees at churches searching for youth ministers, worship leaders, and pastors.
Over the years I developed this guideline: Every new job has surprises. One of the jobs of the search committee is to minimize the surprises. (Those surprised go both ways. The new hire is surprised at some things he finds out about the job that he wished he had known before being hired. The employer finds out things about the new hire that he wished he had known before hiring the new guy.)
So, I'm sure there will be surprises. Riley will be surprised. Dabo will be surprised.
But, when do you think Dabo and Garrett first started talking seriously about this job? I don't mean initial contact. I mean after Dabo's agent and Garrett's agent had talked and had agreed that there might be mutual interest. When do you think Dabo and Garrett first had direct talks (phone, zoom, face to face, etc.)?
I would suggest it was no later than sometime in November.
Dabo didn't decide after the Orange Bowl that he was going to fire Streeter and then think, "OK, now that I've fired Streeter, who am I gonna hire?" Garrett didn't get a phone call, "Hey Garrett, this is Dabo. We've never met, but how would you like to be my OC?" And, in 48 hours Garrett replied, "I accept your offer."
I'm sure they had hours of conversations, probably a couple of face to face meetings (at neutral sites) and in private.
I am confident that Garrett and Dabo have a very good idea of what the current situation in, what the problems are and how they are going to work together to fix them. It ain't, "Come on down. We'll figure it out later."

I'll agree with one statement. It's PR. If there had not been a real danger that offensive recruiting would go downhill, then Dabo likely does not make the move. Streeter improved the offense in his year as OC, and would have likely improved it more with a year to self scout and make a few changes. However, elite players want to play for an elite, dynamic offense. Even with a successful year under, Streeter recruiting would have likely taken a hit, but Riley brings in instant interest. Yes. It's PR.

For one, I'm sure with a brother who has been HC at Oklahoma and now Southern Cal, he is well-informed as to how the business works.
It isn't simply that he helped turn around a TCU team and lead them to the CFB playoffs or that he won the Broyles Award for being the top assistant coach in the country, but he has also been a successful OC at SMU before that.
He's been hired to create a completely new offensive scheme - something he seems more than capable of doing. Chad Morris (who was undoubtedly a success at Clemson) was hired after one year at Tulsa, after being a high school coach.
So what am I missing? Or, maybe, what are you missing?
