Agreed on salt with cantalope, including perfectly ripe ones. Sweet and savory. I have converted numerous anti-salters.

So how do you folks spell cantaloupe? Spell checker is insisting on the “u” version.

Way wrong on that one. I’m as Lowcountry as it gets and I will eat salt on a watermelon occasionally, especially if it is not very ripe. Grits get salt, pepper and cheese. That’s it.

Now…I would think that anyone who wouldn’t put salt on watermelon would be more inclined to do the grits and sugar thing…I’m good either way.

And to those talking about grits…try adding some cayenne pepper if you like it a little hotter…I do salt, crumbled bacon, cheese, and some cayenne. Delicious.

I will put salt on a watermelon or cantaloupe if they are not really ripe. It brings out the sweetness. If the melons are fully ripe, no need for salt.

We did. My older cousin grew tomatoes on Johns Island when I was a kid and I worked in the fields with him a lot. We always had a box of salt on the dashboard of his truck. Nothing better than an almost overripe tomato right off the vine warm from the sun. Ate them like apples but with salt on it.
