Proof that it pays to be nice to “Strangers” on Clemson Campus!!

Back in 2005 My 11 year old “Nephew” & I befriended a couple & their college-age Son while at the Calhoun Mansion hours b/4 a football game and we talked mutual history & admiration of our individual schools, but no football talk surprisingly.

I realized they were classy people and visitors here for the big TV game at 7:30 pm prime-time with both schools ranked in Top 10..but I had no clue as to who they were until reading this letter (open pic by pressing on orange type above) sent to Clemson’s President James Barker a week later from that same visitor I’d met at the Calhoun Home..it was from the President of Texas A&M’s huge Alumni Association (280,000 strong)!

Wow, what a surprise & a small world too..to see my 1st name mentioned in that letter and him having an identical memory of that impromptu chat as we had stood at John C Calhoun’s outer office behind his stately home called Fort Lawn and were looking into its glassed door to see Mr Calhoun’s lovely old wooden desk & leather chair that were actually used in the US Senate..and reading a plaque that stated John “C” had served twice as VP, Sec of War, Treasurer and as a Senator..and he had hosted guests at Fort Lawn like: Patrick Henry & Daniel “Dictionary” Webster!

In that late night game that followed, the Clemson Team had to come from behind in the last minute by going down the field with a 2nd string QB due to an earlier injury, and our FG kicker won the game with a long kick..20-19!

I remember Clemson fans saying later that the Aggie Fans around them were crushed by the last second loss but most were high in their praise of our sportsmanship, team, noise made, beauty of our campus, etc..and thus over those two straight years of home & home competition (now being 1-1) we Tigers & Aggies had agreed that we liked the other AND both had mutually dis-liked state rivals in South Carolina & Texas!

Saying..always be courteous & friendly to everyone on campus including not yelling competitive-like obscenities at rival game-day visitors since you never know who you’re dealing with!

GOTiGERS..Continue to ROCK!

I think this was the game Jad Dean kicked something like 5 field goals and we won 20-19. I believe it was 2006. I was at that game and remember because it was the opening game that year I believe. Cool story.

Great story,Bill. Thx for showing that Clemson spirit.

I don’t think I’ve ever been to a college stadium that tailgating fans were not impressed by the cordiality shown by Clemson fans. The $2 bills really helped establish our identity and generous hospitality ensconced it!

Thanks LBB. I recall we were seated next to a very nice young man who was a ATM alum and he couldn’t have been nicer. I was so impressed, very different from most other rivals!

That’s great!

Reminds me of being at FSU and on the back row of the Clemson section. The FSU folks sitting behind us pointed out different things FSU did that we might not notice, but that we might be interested in, in the stadium. Pretty kool and enjoyed talking to them. There are great people pulling for both teams!

You're a blooming idiot if you are comparing Clemson to Texas A$M. If you like Aggy, then you are a bonafide moron.

Other than being loud, there's simply no comparison and Aggy is obsessed with hating Texas, or 'tu' as they so pathetically call UT.

The morale of the story is be nice to everybody no matter who they are and care less whether they are a part of the retarded Texas A$M system.

So where do “blooming idiot”, “bonafide moron”, and “retarded” fall in the “be nice to everybody” category???

I'm a UT guy and Aggy is the scourge of society and I am even nice to them until they show their true colors which they always do.

Look, you know how coots throw bottles at Clemson? That's how Aggys act when there's a Longhorn around. The real comparison is Coot and Aggy. UT is all class and I consider Clemson classy, too.

You clearly don't know anything about reality.

Ok Scooter, I’m almost 60 years old, semi-retired, moved 9 times in my career, raised 2 children to be successful, respectful adults and all without knowing anything about reality. Sure. I know I’m real glad my children don’t run around hurling insults and calling people they don’t even know names. I’d be pretty disappointed in them just like I’m disappointed to be in any way associated with Clemson fans that act like you.

LOL, I have always heard that Texas had the D-head fans and especially since they have sucked the last 20 years .

Great story LBB. I remember similar comments from Louisville fans after their first visit to DV in 2014 and again in 2016. It’s part of the Clemson culture. Treat everyone with dignity and respect, and welcome them to the place we call Home.

Right, and Aggy doesn't do that. They might be ok to complete strangers like Clemson, but they treat everyone else in our area like garbage. I've had decent conversations with some Aggies one on one, but get them together as a group and they become filled with satan.

bill,i guess my mom was wrong.i was always told never talk to strangers.little story-my son was studying in dublin for a semester while in college,so the missus and i flew over to spend a week.in trying to meet up with sonny we got a bit out out of the way and went into a little store to ask directions.got them and walked out.after walking for a little bit this very nice, irish lady called out to us and offered to take us to our destination.we gladly got into her vehicle and made it to the right place.all well and good.we met my son and told him the story of how mrs. brennan gave us a ride.he scolded us,because all his life he was told never get into a car with strangers.
