THE BEACON

"In the day" in this area the most famous place to eat was "The Beacon".
It was opened in 1946 and was the largest seller in the world of Lipton Tea.
Bags of onions were brought daily and just stacked out side.

John White was a great American.
He used the Beacon to support all local things.
He was a solid Christian, few are a guy like him.

The guy taking orders was mostly blind and would quickly tell you to get out of line if not ready. It was intimidating.
He would yell out your order. The kitchen was busy, no one seemed to notice him yelling.. No matter. As you went down the line with your tray, your order would appear as by magic.

I was there often traveling to foot races in the area with my LERA (Law Enforcement Running Associan) friends. Mr White would come out and welcome us - give us a cake or something.

It’s nowhere near as good. The fries and onion rings often stale, and the burgers are dry and flavorless. The only thing that’s the same to me is the sweet tea!

I am from Greenwood and the Dixie is absolute trash. Sure it may have been good at one point before my time but people only go there for nostalgia. The food is absolutely dog garbage.

Probably great back "in the day", but the food in that pic looks pretty bad...
