Penn State should get the death penalty…...

Jul 12, 2012, 7:28 PM

for two seasons, then after those two seasons for each of the next 3 years they should only be able to have 40 scholarship players. This is the worst scandal in the history of college football, and no other scandal comes even close. This scandal involved a head football coach and top level university administrators covering up for a man that raped boys. Joe Paterno's name should be taken out of all of the NCAA records for coaches. Penn State should also be forced to remove Joe Paterno's name from any buildings or facilities named after him.

Another thing that has been sickening about this scandal, is how Penn State fans come out and say they care about the kids while still defending Joe Paterno. All the while the facts undeniably showed he covered up for a child rapist. And Joe Paterno's family needs to stop trying to uphold his "legacy". His legacy now is a man that covered for a child rapist for at least 13 years. Instead Joe Paterno's family should be apologizing to all the victims of Jerry Sandusky, for Paterno's inaction of stopping Jerry Sandusky.

Don't think it will happen...

As bad as this is for PSU, they are not NCAA violations. Lack of Institutional Control usually applies to lack of control over repeated NCAA rules violations. here, this is a criminal and civil matter that should be and will be adjudicated in the courts. I think the NCAA is likely exceeding its authority if it does anything here. Not to say it won't try, but I just think it's outside of the NCAA's jurisdiction. What they should do is try and change the rules to broaden the definition of lack of institutional control to apply to a situation like this.

you're right, I'm just stating what should happen***

The NCAA can administer no penalty to suit this crime.

Jul 12, 2012, 7:50 PM

25 years per incident should be a good start though. PSU's reaction to that should be delight that not all the victims came forward.

the thing that gives me pause is the cumulative value of a persons life. All of these men were good men who spent their lives trying to do good in the world. Joe Paterno spent 50 years doing things the right way. Due to a monster doing what he did, he not only ruined the lives of the kids he abused, but the lives of men who otherwise lived fine, upstanding lives. While all of the players in this scandal have "blood on their hands", remember they are not guilty of committing these acts, but failing to know what to do when a monster effectively was ending the lives they built. They made the wrong decision and will pay for it. I just hope that we are all judged by the cumulative result of our lives and not the few bad decisions we make.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Joe Paterno knew what was happening for over 10 years

Jul 12, 2012, 9:33 PM

10 freakin years of the act still happening, on his watch, in his locker room. He cared more about his football teams reputation and one of his coaches than he did the Sandusky ruining the lives of innocent children. That is unforgivable.

Jul 12, 2012, 10:31 PM [ in reply to Maybe I'm too forgiving but ]

What kind of credibility do you give these people who knowingly cover up child rape for 14 years? That is 14 years of choosing to do the easier thing.

I don't care if you are my boss, coworker, cousin, brother, or best friend... if you rape children I'm kicking your ### and making sure you are never in position to hurt another child.

If this man was not a football coach, what would you say? Your empathy is truly misguided.

Re: Penn State should get the death penalty…...

Jul 12, 2012, 9:28 PM

I have to agree with you that this is the worst,if not one of the worst scandals in college football, but the Death Penalty is going a bit far.
Look Paterno is dead, and whether or not he is innocent or guilty of any wrong doing is now immaterial. What his family does in relationship to apologizing to the victims has nothing to do with the school.
Sandusky is in jail and will [probably] never leave.
President Spanier,V.P.Schultz,and Athletic Director need to be dealt with by the legal system and not Penn State.Penn State,I believe ,has disassociated themselves from these indididuals.
Legacy aside, don't penalize the University.Penalize the "people" associated with it.Clean House, remove Joe's name from the record book, and any buildings you deem fit and go on.
Don't penalize any of the university's staff, or student body that was not involved in this scandal.Don't keep a kid whose dream of playing for Penn State having that dream shattered.
Any new Head Coach,Athletic Director,or school President is going to have enough headaches, and heartaches to deal with this scandal as is.
But if you going to give Penn State the Death Penalty for the actions of a few bad apples, you might as well close the school.
And that is not fair to future generations who want to bury this scandal.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree with everything you said.***

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Respectfully Disagree

Jul 12, 2012, 9:58 PM

There is no disputing that Sandusky did awful things and others by failing to act let it continue. The system failed many kids who will likely forever carry the scars. All that said, I don't believe the NCAA should hand out the death penalty or frankly anything else. PSU students and players were not involved in this. I can come up with no way in which PSU gained a competitive advantage by having a pedophile.

Yes they handled it very badly and made less important things a priority over kids but in the end punishing the guilty is something that should be done by the courts, society and God but not the NCAA.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

probation because by the time the NCAA investigates and hands down punishment, the kids and coaches involved are typically long gone.

Let me refresh your short term memory loss. USC is on probation now for things done years ago by players and coaches long gone.

Jul 12, 2012, 10:30 PM

What I'm wondering is this. What happen at Penn that would bring in the NCAA. This I think is, is a coach molesting little boys. I mean Sandusky has gone to prison for life. NCAA surely can't do more than that to him. And no FB players were involved.

complete and utter lack of institutional control. Running a clean program isn't simply about players. PSU and Paterno were held up as the poster child of all that is right about college athletics. They shattered that trust and image. This wasn't one incident, this was yearsssss of turning a blind eye and giving Sandusky access to facilities and promoted his image which helped create public/parental trust. PSU did more than enable, they were in ways an active participant.

Jul 13, 2012, 2:19 AM

The NCAA has no reason to administer any penalties to Penn State. Penn State's players had nothing to do with this.

You can't penalize a bunch of college kids for some sick pedophile and a bunch of other adults covering it up. The proper authorities can and will determine the appropriate punishment for those men, but if the NCAA gets involved, they will be doing wrong.

You can't let a criminal investigation determine the fate of a football program when the players had nothing to do with the wrongdoing.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You folks are sadly misguided. NCAA oversight doesn't begin

Jul 13, 2012, 3:10 AM

and end with players. The HC, AD, and school were in this up to their eyeballs. These guys are probably going to jail, they committed federal crimes, not to mention ruined dozens of childrens lives. The NCAA should kill PSU football for 10 years.

Re: You folks are sadly misguided. NCAA oversight doesn't begin

Jul 13, 2012, 4:52 AM

The NCAA should stay out of this. This is a crimminal investigation involving school administrators, and not student athletes.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Bingo.

Jul 13, 2012, 4:10 PM

Punish the people for the hideous crimes that were committed? Yes, without a shadow of a doubt.

What in the world did Penn State's players do to deserve the NCAA getting involved? I think the death penalty would be a gross misuse of power by the NCAA.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

B1G should evict them from the conference.***
