Penalty for faking injuries is being discussed. Do you

think there should be a penalty? The discussion is the trend in football to be more soccer like and fake injuries to slow down the offensive tempo. Personally I think if any penalty is made it should be one of attrition. If you go down with an "injury" you need to stay out of the game until you offense has possessed the ball and defense is back on the field.
In Clemson's current case that would mean sitting out for three Clemson offensive plays.

My thoughts are two series of downs... The one you lay down and the next. If you can go after that, fine.

You’ll just have someone sending in a bench warmer

Pretending to be a substitute, run out about 10 yards then start acting like he pulled a hamstring and go down. You can’t penalize fake injuries.

Exactly. Offenses go up tempo to gain an advantage. Defenses are going to do what they have to to mitigate that advantage. You want to go fast so they can't substitute or can't get into position? This is their answer.

Did a Dawg fan just say that on a Clemson board? Trust me, we are aware of the SEC strategy...

I did say that. I'll say it again, coaches will find ways to mitigate against the opposing coach's advantages.

It's a tough thing to police. I would hate to have a QB get the wind knocked out of him on a game winning drive and have to sit out. Something needs to be done though.

While it seems “easy” to spot purposeful fake injury (most of the time to slow an in sync offense). If anybody’s ever had a true cramp it hits quick and is pretty debilitating for a short time, which makes it appear like a purposeful drop to the ground. I think it’d be hard to police.

YES I call it the SEC I tired time out think back to our Tigers vs LSU (1st game)& Auburn games in fact 1 of the LSU players stated after the game he was not coming back never wanted to play 90 snaps on D again Just my view SEC players lay down the most
I never like to see a player get hurt Medical staff needs at least 3 plays to check and evaluate player

What if Someone is really hurt but won't go down ?

This is a devils advocate comment. I actually think some form of punishment should happen but I don't see any way to implement it because sometimes players really are hurt. What if a player really is hurt but won't go down out of fear of a penalty or several downs and it gets hurt worse?
Sometimes a kid rolls and ankle, lots of cramps, pulled muscles where they can walk it off pretty quickly and get back in the game.
I personally feel if a kid is injured enough to go down or leave the game then a reasonable number of downs should occur to properly evaluate the player.
As for sending a bench warmer in to take a dive I'm not so certain. Teams typically will go HUNH when they catch a defense in a certain situation where they can't substitute.

Yes! Penalize the team with the injured player 5 yards for delay of game, then move the ball and run the next play.

We all pretty much can tell when it's a fake injury (i.e. the UGA flop) but there could be some legit injuries that we think are flops. Therefore,
Stop the Flop Rule:
For the health and safety of the player, if a player leaves the field with an injury, they are not eligible to return until after a change of possession. If the player returns to the field before a change of possession, there is a 15 yard unsportsman like conduct penalty against the team. A second offense would be another 15 yard penalty and ejection of the Head Coach.
That would stop the flops!

But remember Trevor getting knocked down hard against 0310 St, being out one play then running past all of them for a TD? I hate a flop as much as anyone but this would be very hard to enforce fairly.
GT had a good one this year too. Injury TO for a lost shoe. See attached video.

Botched the targeting rule (even with replay) by not consistently applying the rule. (See Alabama who targets head all game every game and NEVER gets a player ejected).

to the game. It'd have to be enforced both ways and like other said, this could include a key offensive player.
Its more realistic to require a guy to sit 2-5 plays instead of 1 but then you have to appoint an official to monitor that and then it could become a big argument if they sneak a guy back in early and the officials get confused (which they will) and then you head to replay to find out who is right and its another stoppage of play. That's a real scenario and we'd all complain about that too.

that player is not permitted to return to the game until the next defensive series. That would put an end to most of the bulls**t.

I'm thinking the same here. The "SEC flop" is a defense thing, as there's no benefit for an offense to fake an injury, so offensive players don't need to be subject to any new rule. Just hold the defensive player ineligible the rest of that drive. If someone is injured but insists on playing through and hiding it, then they're likely hurting their own team.

Since we are semi-pro now, just start fining the players for doing it. Works for the NFL.

To me it’s an easy solution. If you get hurt to the point you can’t walk off the field then you stay out for that defensive series. Apply it to the offense to make it fair. If your injury is that bad you need some time to recuperate. Player safety .

The only problem I see with this is...

Who is going to determine the player is faking the injury? I mean most of these refs are doing good to make the right call when a player jumps offsides. Are the leagues going to be responsible for having a neutral medical staff at each game to evaluate the injury? To me stopping the game to try and figure out if the player is really hurt would slow it down even more.
I think the only way to "penalize" a team for faking injuries would be what you've said. If a player goes down, regardless of severity of the injury, they can not come back in until the next series.

Just ask the Tennessee fans. They were judge and jury against Old Miss players in that game. Even as the game wore on, there were as many Tennessee players going down as Old Miss. In one instance, Tennessee's QB (Harper) went down and an Ole Miss player at the same time. The stadium was quiet. As they helped Harper off the field, then the Tennessee fans began booing the Old Miss player who was still down.
Creating a penalty is going to be a tough call. Are there fakes, yes. Are there real injuries, Yes.
If it comes to penalties, it seems it will have to be some plays to sit out. That covers the fakes, And it covers the players who in fact were injured.

That's the thing, no one will ever be able to tell 100% if injury is a fake, which is why I'd hate to see any yardage tacked on.

You don't need to prove that anyone is faking an injury if they have to come out of the game no matter what and stay out for a certain number of plays or until the ball is turned over. Players already have to come out of the game for a play if their helmet comes off. Why not make certain they are not seriously injured or faking by making them come out and stay out for a bit?
It would certainly make a coach think twice about letting players fake injuries if they have to come out and stay out for for a few plays. If they are really injured they are going to be out anyway.
Someone mentioned cramps. Cramps are mostly caused by dehydration. In that case a player should come out and get rehydrated anyway and then go back in.
