That was a special time. 1978/79
Charlie Pell had just sworn his allegiance to Clemson. Then as Danny and other s were on a recruiting trip in Charlotte that Friday night, they were told to return to Clemson. Pell met with the coaches and told them he was leaving for Fla, after days of speculation. Pell left in the middle of the night(so we were told) I could be wrong but I do not think he addressed the players.
Some on here say you cannot take a position coach and make him a head coach. Danny was an o-line coach, but had an honorary a position of assistant head coach.
He took the team down to the Gator Bowl (see ya later we are going to the Gator) and beat Ohio state and Woody Hayes and I was there. It was the end of Woody and the beginning of Danny.
Danny was as country as the day is long, but no dummy. He looked around at all the young coaches and realized he needed help. He called on a veteran of football wars and hired Tom Harper, who helped guide the Tigers to prominence.
Danny has admitted that Harper was a big key, but Danny had the foresight to see the need .
Then the legend was born.
I am not sure what the point of all this is, maybe just reminiscing the days back then. They were glorious. We can never go back.
But we sure can go forward.

Pell actually delivered a tearful address to the Tigers

before departing for Gainesville. He was introduced hours later as the Gators new Head Coach...in the same Clemson Orange blazer if I recall correctly.
Pell was a great DC under Parker and as Head Coach assembled an all-star staff at Clemson. Most on that staff went on to long, successful coaching careers in big programs across the country. RIP Charlie.

I thought Pell and his staff came from Va. Tech to Clemson ?
