Vacation.net: Gulf recommendations

I am determined to improve my station in life.
I vow to not vacation in Myrtle Beach this year.
A dream of my wife's was to always take the kids to the gulf for them to play in the water (I have no idea why that's a dream)
So. Beaches along the gulf (would prefer not to stay in peninsula part of Florida) particularly panhandle part of Florida

If you can afford it, 30A, but it is EXPENSIVE.
Destin is a great beach but the traffic and crowds are terrible. However, there is plenty for kids to do and a lot of housing options. Beautiful beaches.
Fort Walton is a little run down for my tastes. Pensacola Beach is fine but crowded.
Perdido; Orange Beach, Alabama; and Gulf Shores, Alabama are all good options. Cheaper than the Florida beaches with less traffic and plenty to do. The beaches are beautiful, although not as pretty as Destin and further east. If you want isolation and to be right on the beach, Fort Morgan is your go to.
Under no circumstances should you go to beaches in Mississippi.

or two every year. Not a lot of commercialism, so plan to do beachy stuff like boating/fishing not go karting mini golfing. It’s a good place to unplug from normal life for a while.

If your wife is looking to relax on some white sand and see some blue water..why not leave the kids at home and fly to Staniel Cay in the Exumas for a long weekend? Dragging your family across 3 states is going to ruin it before you even get there. Besides...you already live a couple hours from where people from all over the US come to vacation.
But if you want your kids to actually remember the vacation, forget about all the BS, t-shirts, restaurants and crap and go to Folly, Edisto or IOP and get something on the ICW and do some fishing and crabbing with them, and let your wife chill on the beach for a while. I think about all the places my parents used to take us growing up, but the most memorable were all just hanging out fishing and doing stuff outside and just taking it easy. No stores, no amusement parks, none of that. Why do you think I jumped at having a chance to live on the island for a couple years? It was the best thing I ever did mental health wise.

Are you wanting a touristy place or somewhere quiet?

If you want trashy eye candy for yourself, Panama City. Family friendly with still some eye candy, Fort Walton/Destin area.
Pensacola Beach will also put you near the navy aviation museum if that’s your thing for a side visit. But if you want a quiet family outing, stay west of Pensacola and into the Alabama beaches.

Seaside is beautiful but can be crowded...

If you are cool with staying where you have a trek to the beach, there are some houses that require a bike ride but they are a lot cheaper than the ones on 30A or in seaside proper.
Also, watch the Truman show before you go and your kids will recognize a lot of stuff from the movie.
