WTH!?! Carolina Day !?!

It’s true I haven’t lived in the Charleston area since the 90’s but I just read that they now have a big celebration honoring Col. Moultrie’s victory against the British on Sullivan’s Island June 28, 1776. They call it “Carolina Day” ?!? Why not “Moultrie Day” or the “Battle of Sullivan’s Island Day”??
Anything but “C day”. I’m pretty sure some big time coots had something to do with this. Next year, if able, I will attend and take a Tiger Flag!
Go Tigers!

I agree that technically it is an improper name. In 1712, the Carolinas were split into a northern portion and a southern portion. The battle in question was fought in South Carolina, not "Carolina."

I live in charleston and didn't know their was a celebration or even a carolina day. Looks like the only celebration that happened was out at Fort Moultrie and was a small one at that. Although if you've never been to Fort Moultrie, it's cool piece of history.

Edgar Allen Poe was there and decided to write The Raven.
And I think the Raven said: "Never more! No! Always less. Life is good. Palmetto trees sure are ugly. But they did save our lives. So there is that. Always less." And someone yelled: "Shutup, I'm trying to sleep." And the raven flew away. More history next Thursday at 9:30 pm.

Those palmetto logs were amazing, but

had the British infantry been able to cross Breach Inlet from (current) IOP, the battle would have been lost. Fort Sullivan was a great story, but had Breach Inlet been passable, the outcome would have been different

dangerous waters around! Some folk from off always drowning there. Despite numerous warning signs that forbid even wading in the waters of Breach Inlet, folk drown there on a regular basis. Too sad.
And the Brits thought they could just wade across the water - silly things!
We also get out state flag from this battle. The flag of Col. Moultrie was a blue (indigo?) field with a small cresent in the upper corner. Many, myself included, believe this crescent is a gorget (throat armor) rather than a crescent moon. The palmetto tree was later added to this flag in honor of the palmetto logs that comprised the fort’s structure - we all know the British cannon balls simply bounced off the resilient logs. This became our South Carolina state flag. The Sgt. Jasper deed of bravery also adds to this story.
I took two of my grands to the fort last Saturday to witness reinactors fire muskets and cannons. Kids were impressed!
In three years will be the 250 year celebration of the battle. If I’m still around I hope to see it - should be impressive!
Go Tigers!
