Not sure, but it is much more common for kids to transfer these days and is trending upward. I think most teams out of the top 30 probably seek transfers.

Maybe that will have to be our best chance at building a good team to prove that Clemson is getting serious about having a serious BB program. Bc big time HS talent right now with us not being known as a serious BB program, they won't give us a second look, and surely not a first look. If we have to get help building a program through transfers, so be it. Take the path of the least resistance!!! If Brad can build a good team from the best he can get from HS, then make up or fill in from transfers, go for it. When you are winning, it don't matter how you got it going as long as it was within the rules!!!

it is in football. Not just a Clemson phenomenon. I do wonder why it's so prevalent for kids to leave a school so quickly these days.

With one and possibly two more schollies to give that number could go up to 8.

So what? The point is getting the best collection of talent possible.

As long as we do it legally, and steadily increase our talent level, I'm all for it.
When you look at the talent on our current team from top to bottom, it is one of the most talented teams we have had. If JB returns, this team has the potential to be our best team since the Sweet Sixteen team in 96-97.

It's bc some coaches and their school are recruiting a lot of premium talent. Those type of kids want more playing time to help them chase their dream of playing NBA ball.

putting no pressure on the coaching staff for next year, just as we saw this past year and the year before.
With a brand new facility, is our recruiting improving?
I would say no, but it would be hard to argue anything more than tiny baby steps at best.

With 700+ transfers a year, they are recruiting
May 23, 2016, 3:33 PM

By HS star ratings: Thomas was a 5, Mitchell a 4. Holmes and Reed certainly outperformed their star ratings from high school at mid majors, Robertin was a highly recruited 3 star. Not sure about this guy, but yes, recruiting has improved, just not in a conventional way. But when have we ever been a consistent factor in HS recruiting? Ever??? The transfer route is a good route for us, especially guys we get for 2-3 years

Looks like Holmes was a 2 star, Skara and Reed unranked.

Robertin was a 4 star with ESPN, which is surprising given his performance last year, and unranked elsewhere. Thomas was a consensus 4 star. Seems incremental on paper at best.
But, it does delay the improvement of your team and limits your ability to respond to injuries and early departures as each player has to sit out a year.
It's no secret we need more and better talent. The continued focus on transfers who will have to sit out again this year, even with the new facilities, is an indication that our coaching staff doesn't feel pressure to get it done next year and hasn't been able to capitalize on the new facilities.

they can. Not sure what you're expecting in regards to recruiting high schoolers. We've never been a major player with HS elite recruits. Almost all of our greatest players were HS players who were finds, not top 100. Other than Tree, Sharone Wright and Skip Wise, all were finds. Nance, Grant, Campbell, Davis, Buckner, Booker, you name them. When we have landed big time recruits they've basically flopped; Bynum, Jones, Jennings. Cliff Ellis best teams were loaded with transfers. It isn't ideal, but with our history and who we recruit against, what exactly are you wanting?

Any kid who you recruited this year would be practicing and playing in the new facility. Should be an easy sell, if facilities are indeed the problem.

May 23, 2016, 4:06 PM

On paper the group that BB has collected is about as good as any overall group we've ever brought in (legally) ... most of these guys are the caliber of players that we traditionally haven't been able to sign out of high school.
I applaud his efforts. I look forward to seeing if he can turn this diverse array of guys who were all highly regarded out of high school into a solid Clemson "team" on the court.
Honestly, at this particular juncture a "fast track" strategy of bringing in transfers is about the only option BB has to jump start the program as we move to the new facility.
I hope it works!
Go Tigers!!!

Wake up! Transfers are now a significant part of the college basketball landscape.
May 23, 2016, 11:54 PM

If BB finds that transfers are better than high school players to get the guys he wants, then I'm all for it.
Since I'm sure you didn't know, we have beaten out some strong programs for these transfers over the last few years. It's not like they are rejects.

exactly how is recruiting a transfer who sits out next year
May 23, 2016, 6:17 PM
|
|
any different than getting a HS kid to sign after his junior year?
Isn't the HS kid going to play next year as a senior in HS.
Don't both methods have the same one-year delay in effect on the program?
Literally the only difference is how many years they will be under scholarship with us.
But a transfer who has 2 years left should have matured 2 years already and should make instant impact on the team.
Most of our good players recruited out of HS will make some contributions as sophomores but won't be leaders per se on the team.
The big jump for HS kids seems to come in the Junior year - one year we get whether they're recruited out of HS or as transfers.
So there seems little if any difference in recruiting transfers from HS kids.
Of course, I'm not Chicken Little running around with my head cut off about Brad Brownell either.....

Who cares about all the rhetoric....... stay within the rules and, just win, baby. Tiger basketball needs all the assistance they can get after so many years of being ignored.
There is no reason we can't have a great basketball program.
