Origin of Germans

I’m probably infringing on some secret society handshake stuff here but does anyone have the origin story on the use of the term “Germans” on Tigernet?

I don't have the exact story but the paraphrased version of it is there was a poster who meant to type "germain" but ended up with Germans. Spellchecker is probably the culprit but it was funny and so it stuck. Kind of like when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor........

It has been a while since I have searched for it but at one point there was a "dictionary" post with quite a few of the sayings that Tigernet adopted over time

It stems from the John Belushi line in Animal House, was it over when the “Germans bombed Pearl Harbor “. Not saying that necessarily makes sense, but that was the original reference and it morphed. Anyone else care to add to this?

Not sure but it probably comes from the line in Animal House that follows the "Germans bombed Pearl Harbor" quote

Leave him alone, he's on a roll.

which is a quote from the movie Animal House.

In TigerNet lingo, it was shortened to simply "Germans" meaning something that is well-known but still repeated/posted ad nauseam.

Haha, pretty sure I triggered this discussion with an earlier post. I hope I didn’t nauseate anyone, though it appears I did from some of the replies!

It’s all good; it’s a message board.

Germans -A term now meaning "A post that has been thoroughly discussed way to many times already, you jerk". A corruption of the John Belushi quote "Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!" from the classic college movie Animal House; first used on the Tigerboard by 3rdgeneration® in the fall of 1999 after a particularly galling Clemson loss. This quote was used over and over to trip up newbies to the Tigerboard who hadn't seen (how, I'm not quite sure) Animal House into correcting our "Germans" to "Japs", placing them immediately on "double-secret probation"; much to the delight of old-timers. See also, "Pearl Harbor".

As alluded to by many here, it originated from a phrase people have always used to mean old news "Japan bombs Pearl Harbor".

When the Jim Belushi's character Bluto in Animal House was trying to rally the frat brothers, he used the phrase "Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?!"

Somehow "Germans.." morphed into the new way to convey "Old News".

I assumed that someone wrote something like, “it’s probably not germane, but…..”. Then in short order, one of our resident class clowns turned that into, “probably Germans”.

The origin doesn’t really matter if you take it with a grade of slaw.

I used to work with a guy that was born in Germany and raised in Norway. He turned, “it’s a dog eat dog world” into, “it’s a doggy dog world”. The greatness of it was, he didn’t know he was saying it wrong.

I had to google it a few years back, everything I saw said it was standard message board slang originating from the fact in Nazi Germany they would hold off on broadcasting world news until it fit their agenda, therefore broadcasting it late.

TLDR late or repeated news = Germans
