We haven’t used slants or shallow crosses since Renfrow left

Or, depending on your perspective, since Jeff Scott left as co-OC/passing game coordinator.
Streeter learned primarily from Elliott.

Re: Is this bad play calling / few over-the-middle routes

Hate to suggest this, but since gutty Renfrow our WRs get alligator arms when running over the middle routes such as slants.
If I'm DJ, I'm not throwing over the middle passes unless they are a comeback route or unless the WR is camped out (static, not moving) in the middle. Our WRs' arms don't seem to shrink up when that happens.

zone of a good bit of the night, safeties were kind of cheated up into the box to help with the run. For DJ, if you have routes in the middle against this kind of look, throwing windows are smaller. Streeter could've called something middle over the top to stretch the zone and keep the safeties honest. It did not appear he wanted to do this though.

I've said enough negative about DJ to be embarrassed.

However it's been limited to saying his brain is playing one game and his body is playing another. The coaches are adjusting the play calls to what DJ can do on the field in a game. He appeared to make the correct decision on what appeared to be option reads the first three times it appeared to be called.
I say 'appeared, appeared and appeared,' because It was obvious throughout the remainder of the game his apparent option decisions were closer to 10% accurate. I refuse to believe he could bat 1000 in the first three at bats then bat 100 for the rest of the game. I am convinced that the coaches are making the decision on which 'option,' is run.
He still can't hit a moving target, at least not during a game. If a receiver is moving directly or nearly directly away from him, his accuracy is fairly good much of the time. That's the same when the target is stationary and/or if they are both moving toward the strong side at about the same speed.
Every coach we've faced since Georgia, the first game last season, has let his secondary know that they only have to cover two receivers when DJ is behind center. They cover the one he is looking directly at throughout the play and the checkdown man.
If you've noticed how many times DJ has thrown to a covered receiver and/or into double coverage you might wonder how it appears DJ's receivers always seem to be covered. It's not possible that every secondary we face has our receivers' routes set to memory. If our guys don't get open we whine about them not doing their jobs. When the corner covering you and the safety both know you're going to get that ball it puts you in quite a pickle.
That makes opponent's defense of a running play much easier, nobody is coming across the middle. That portion of the field is a deadzone. So far in the last two years our wins came because the linemen, RBs and receivers have out performed our opponents.
I'm not embarrassed about my opinion. IDK if DJ can be fixed.

It was good play calling based on coverage.
SMH at all the WHY AINT WE THROWIN OVER THE MIDDEL when facing tampa 2/cover 2.
The space and/or numerical advantages can be found on the edges.

A Tampa 2 D is going to send the mike LB on a blitz, leaving the middle open, which is usually when a QB will check to a play there…..quick slant or slip the RB/TE there for a quick hit.
They did that with the Mike. We didn’t with the check.
