Option 1 or 2?

Sep 28, 2021, 7:56 AM

1. Fit the players to the system

2. Fit the system to the players

“You have to have a system that can adapt and adjust and it really depends on who your players are and their skillset”

-Nick Saban

Is Clemson doing that?

Remember Cole Stout in Russell Athletic Bowl versus Cole Stout in regular season with Chad Morris?

Has success made the system inflexible?

Too bad this thread hasn't caught traction. Actually there's been some good discussions on this but the problem is you have to dig through the trash to find it. Here's my 2 cent knowledge and opinion.

Don't think our success has made it inflexible. Obviously the coaches felt they had option 1. Sounds like, from what the coaches are saying, the kids were getting it in practice but for whatever reason, haven't been able to take it to the field. We lost a couple pieces along the way too.

Jmho, dw4 and tl16 were natural fits to our system. Option 1. Dj5, not so much but he must feel, and the coaches too, he could grow into the system. I sincerely believe (as coaches and players both have said) it's not a lack of trying, it's just not happening fast enough.

Dj5 lost a lot with no ETN or Amari. We lost to injuries some key pieces on the oline. A lot like what CBV went through. Hopefully, without writing a book, you get the jist of where I'm coming from.

Just like Skalski is the QB on defense, a lot is asked of our QB on offense. Don't underestimate the importance of how key both are to running our system. Our oline isn't built to plow guys down and run like Wisky, not who we are. You've got to have a back that can hit the hole (crease) quick and burst. We don't have that. So it's not just one thing, it's multiple issues.

Great reply, thanks for a informative response. That’s what I’m trying to do is spark discussion. I don’t think there is a one size fits all solution like ‘fire TE’ or ‘bench DJU’ this runs much deeper and this why coaches are not reacting in a knee jerk way. Yes they could do this and then what happens if we still suck. Glad I’m not in a position to have to make these tough choices and I’m just a fan.
