COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Terry Allen and Tony Kennedy scored two touchdowns each Saturday night to help No. 13 Clemson whip cross-state rival South Carolina 45-0.

The Tigers, expected to receive a bid to meet West Virginia in the Gator Bowl, improved to 8-2. The Gamecocks close their season at 5-4-1 after their worst loss to Clemson since a 51-0 drubbing in 1900.

South Carolina, without injured quarterback Todd Ellis, could do little against the stronger, more experienced Clemson defense. The Tigers held USC to 155 yards total offense, intercepted three passes and registered two sacks for 20 yards in losses. South Carolina quarterbacks Dickie DeMasi and Pat Turner completed 7 of 15 passes for 36 yards.

Clemson put the game away in little more than six minutes. Allen, who rushed for 97 yards on 14 carries before leaving the game with a knee injury late in the first half, scored on a 12-yard run with 8:49 left in the first quarter. Twenty seconds later, Jerome Henderson intercepted a DeMasi pass to set up a 54-yard drive capped by Allen's 1-yard score with 4:53 to go in the period.

Chris Gardocki's 28-yard field goal with 9:17 left in the second quarter gave Clemson a 17-0 lead.

The Tigers drove 87 yards on their next possession with Chris Morocco tossing a 12-yard touchdown pass to Rodney Fletcher to push the margin to 24-0 at halftime.

Kennedy's 30-yard touchdown run with 4:26 to go in the third quarter made it 31-0. Clemson completed the rout with Junior Hall dashing 22 yards for a touchdown and Kennedy scoring from 1-yard out after Clemson's Kenzil Jackson blocked a punt.

Joe Henderson carried 19 times for 88 yards and Kennedy gained 67 yards on 9 carries for Clemson.

South Carolina's best scoring chances were a missed 47-yard field goal attempt by Collin Mackie in the second quarter and deseration pass by DeMasi intercepted in the end zone by Eric Jeter on the last play of the game.

Best Is The Standard

THIS is the biggest beatdown in the rivalry's history to my

way of thinking. If I remember right, they only crossed midfield once or maybe twice. The outcome was never in doubt from the opening gun. Had to be totally demoralizing for them, except that they are used to such stuff, so, situation normal.

:)

The first time the Orange Britches were seen on the road. I was a child, but the was my favorite Clemson team until Dabo came along and brought us back and then up to the elite.

Sparky Wood was asked by a reporter, "What was the turning point of the game?"
Sparky's reply. "The opening kick off!"

Also, My brother and I attended the game that night. As we took our seats, we were the only two Clemson fans sitting among nothing but garnet. One of the Carolina fans told my brother how bad that Carolina was going to beat Clemson that night. My brother looked him dead in the eye and said "If you think HUGO was bad, just wait until the tigers get through you!!" After the game the same guy asked my brother if he was a profit.lol

I remember that game well and always loved Allen at RB.

Who would have thought it would have been Ford’s last Clemson/SC game.

Pardon my free use of the word Carolina. I know it should be South Carolina.

The only bad part of that game was seeing Terry Allen carted off the field in his last game as a Tiger, and little did we know it at the time, but Ford's next to last game as head coach which would ultimately begin our fall down the mountain and 20 year wander through the desert waiting for Dabo to arrive and lead us back to glory.

I thought he came back from injury against USC and played fullback. Could be wrong, but the Virginia game in the Valley was where he was carted off.

I was there and it was glorious. Only second to the 63-17 beat down which I also attended.
