Clemson S.C. (AP) – Clemson QB Steve Fuller tossed a 19-yard Touchdown pass to jerry Butler with 12:46 left in the game to lift the nationally 20th ranked Tigers to a 7-3 victory over the North Carolina State Wolfpack in an Atlantic Coast Conference game Saturday afternoon.
The victory was Clemson’s sixth in a row and left the Tigers with a 6-1 overall record (3-1 ACC). State fell to 5-3 (3-2).
Clemson’s deepest penetration until the final quarter was to the ‘Pack 40-yard line. Willie Jordan fielded a State punt at his own goal line and streaked 75 yards up the near sideline to the Wolfpack 25, setting up the only touchdown of the game.
Fuller threw one incomplete pass, then ran six yards to the 19 before tossing the winning touchdown to Butler at the 10-yard line, and the speedster twisted and made it into the end zone standing up. Obed Ariri kicked the extra point, his 14th in a row on the season, to close out the scoring.
State had taken a 3-0 lead in the third quarter on a Jay Sherrill 39-yard field goal, after the Wolfpack had been stopped at the Clemson 22 following the second-half kickoff. State had plenty of time to catch up with the Tigers after Butler's touchdown, but interceptions by Clemson's Steve Ryan with 5:58 left in the game and another by Rick Varn with 1:18 left in the game sealed the victory for the Tigers.
Fuller completed 8 of 21 passes for 97 yards. The total pushed him to 2,073 yards 1 in his career, sixth best in Clemson records. He performed despite a hand injury that had kept him out of practice all week.
If memory serves, Obed also saved this game with a tackle on the kickoff after our touchdown. I was there, and sweating bullets. Good, hard hitting game, sweet victory!
I’m thinking it was Rex Varn that got the interception to seal the win. I was there as well. I remember a friend of my dad’s saying it was nice to win after getting your ### beat all day.
