Old Timers Question - Bottles and Cans

Feb 10, 2017, 8:16 PM

I see folks talking about 1981 National Championship Coke bottles. When I see these I chuckle. How many have a 1974 Undefeated Home Season Coke Bottle? I do! It amazes me when I read about the "Turn-Around" coaches. They do not mention Red Parker. Red was the one who brought in Steve Fuller, Dwight Clark, Jerry Butler. I always felt that Red never got the respect he deserved. It was common to hear Clemson fans say that Charlie Pell and Danny Ford won with Red's players. I was at the basketball game when Red Parker was introduced as Clemson's next head football coach. His experience at The Citadel did not inspire a lot of confidence. He didn't promise an immediate winner. His final words when he was introduced to the students were something like this; "....any team playing Clemson had better bring a sandwich and a sweet roll because beating Clemson will be an ALL DAY JOB!" He was the first one to hold up 4 Fingers at the start of the 4th quarter.

Me too! And the way Red Parker found out he was fired was not our finest hour. It's be said he herd it on the radio on the way over to meet with the AD and administration. If given more time he may had the same success as Charlie Pell. I mean we almost fired DF but he won the SC game in the Orange Pants. Wow what a huge mistake that would have been!

I own a 1974 Un-Defeated bottle. I agree by most of your sentiment. Their were coaches that brought in players all across the line that have helped Clemson un Swinney accomplish what He is accomplishing with these students today. No doubt at all, a lot of ground work was laid before we got to this point. I remember since the 80's, some further back than that of course. Point is, I can see the validity of your point made. It has been a building process, that has taken decades to earn the brand Clemson, with many of the former players and coaches influences of the past paving the way.
