Ron DeSantis slams CFP, wants to sue over Florida State's snub play ESPN News Services Dec 5, 2023, 06:00 PM ET Share LikeLike Open Extended Reactions LikeFunnyWow 1.7K TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis took the College Football Playoff committee to task on Tuesday, slamming its decision to exclude the undefeated Florida State football team from the four-team playoff.
DeSantis, speaking at a news conference to detail his proposed $114.4 billion budget for Florida, said he is asking for $1 million to let FSU sue the CFP committee even though the championship will be decided months before a budget is approved. The semifinals are set for Jan. 1, with the championship game to be played Jan. 8.
"My first-grader, my fifth-grader and my preschooler ... they are all Noles and they are big-time fans and they do the tomahawk chop and they were not happy," DeSantis said. "We are going to set aside $1 million and let the chips fall where they may."

Noles vs. Dawgs in Orange as New Year's Six set 2d DeSantis' recommendation is simply a suggestion to the Florida Legislature, which will begin its annual session next month. Once the Legislature agrees on a spending plan, DeSantis will have power to veto individual items.
Florida State's omission from the CFP elicited a fiery response from the team and its supporters. Head coach Mike Norvell said he was "disgusted and infuriated" with the Seminoles becoming the first unbeaten Power 5 conference winner to ever miss out, while ACC commissioner Jim Phillips called the decision "unfathomable."
While Michigan (13-0, Big Ten champion), Washington (13-0, Pac-12 champion), Texas (12-1, Big 12 champion) and Alabama (12-1, SEC champion) were the top four teams who made it into the playoff, the Seminoles (13-0) were judged by an untimely run of injuries at the quarterback position.
"Florida State is a different team than it was the first 11 weeks," CFP selection committee chairman Boo Corrigan told ESPN. "As you look at who they are as a team right now, without Jordan Travis, without the offensive dynamic he brings, they are a different team and the committee voted Alabama four and Florida State five."
Travis, the ACC Player of the Year, suffered a season-ending broken leg against North Alabama in mid-November. Backup Tate Rodemaker suffered a concussion late in the Seminoles' regular-season finale at Florida, leading to true freshman Brock Glenn, the third-stringer, starting in the ACC title game -- a victory against Louisville.
Florida State, as the No. 5 seed, will face two-time defending national champion Georgia (No. 6) in the Capital One Orange Bowl on Dec. 30.

Florida has the best economy in the US, and they do it without a state income tax. Say what you want, numbers do not lie. The liberal states are a mess, Florida is flourishing.

with a $68 billion deficit and some of the highest income taxes in the country. Florida has no income taxes and has a $21 billion surplus. Seems that 5th largest economy isn't working so well.

Imagine one company having that much influence over a state, entertainment and sports. It's time for "Roman Empire" exit for Disney.

define butt kicked?
Disney sued DeSantis not the other way around...
Ready Creek left most of the admin to Walt Disney Parks and Resorts U.S. Inc., so the move to change the district to be under state control was largely muted... the results of that move will take time to see if the retribution was short term win the fight lose the war or not.
Disney is hemorrhaging money... Florida is not.
So not sure how this is "butt kicked" ...
Oh and HB1557 is law...

While I don't like government interference in football, they may have a case to be made. It just depends on what they can prove. The first thing that comes to mind is fraud. The problem is that they would have to prove that the CFP committee has communicated that an undefeated P5 Conference champ (or a similar criteria that FSU meets) would be in the CFP and did so deceivingly. I'm not aware of any explicit communication they could use to prove this. Unless they go the route of 'implied contract' citing previous actions of the CFP committee. It's possible, but it's a longshot and IMO even a guilty verdict wouldn't render much in judgement. I don't know how they could possibly penalize the CFP committee. They couldn't retroactively award FSU the championship or penalize whoever wins.

They are looking to sue for subpoena power to receive communications that may show collusion that caused 10s of millions in projected losses to a state university and constituents. As well as a breach to the GOR contract. A judge could grant that power on the basis of not following precedent as laid out, the media rights tie of CFP & ESPN, etc. Huge if, but if they could find some communication that points to collusion based on potential media revenue figures that damages FSU it could show a breach of contract.
Obviously slim chance of anything coming from it but any potential crack in the GOR armor is worth keeping an eye on.

That doesn’t make it logical or right.
College football is the only sport to hyper focus on a beauty contest in a game where winning isn’t always pretty. That’s a fail.
Structure the playoffs just like everyone else. Release “the code” and eliminate a subjective (and ridiculous) eye test. Eyes don’t predetermine winners.
Even when we go to 12 next year, we need to see the algorithm and vote process.
It’s not that hard.

"Florida State" is a State supported university so you could say that the gubermint is not only involved and has been in a long time in many aspects just as Clemson is supported by the State of SC. I do understand you are referring to State involvement in sports but we already know that the Feds and States have been involved in sports for sometime also. I'm not advocating that past interference and any future involvement of the gubermint in sports is good just laying it out there that it is nothing new. Politics and gubermint interference (by the gamecoots of the day) was involved in the very founding of Clemson.
I would have preferred to wait until the outcome of the Orange Bowl before ratcheting up any real action but I believe the goal is not to seek compensation but rather seek transparency on what happened in the inner workings. Many might say they don't care or are not interested but I do believe everyone would be interested in knowing if the process was fair or if coerced or if racketeering was present.
As far as DeSantis and his governance goes you can't argue with the results but the leftist aren't happy because Florida is not failing California.

I hope he does. The more heat that is brought the less likely it will happen again. They broke the ice with this stupid decision, a barrier that no other committee dared to breach. Now that is has, it will be easier to do again and again. I wish every ACC school and anybody else that feels led to would sue the committee. Personally and corporately.

you don't think politics are already in play?
CFP is huge for a school... you witnessed the impact at Clemson... all that money and growth came after we went to the Natty... also has its downside...
FSU getting boxed out is bad for FSU, the Conference and every team in the Conference ... winning every game may not be enough...
The new 12 team is going to be very SEC/B1G heavy, couple other teams scattered in there...1st round games will be huge money makers for the higher ranked (home/host) team... kinda fitting for today's world ... win and lose money but you get a week of rest...

The last thing we need is for politics to be involved....
Don't you think it's a bit late for that? Truth is, this was my knee-jerk as well. But the State of Fla has FSU, Miami and U of Fla to worry about. How many constituents are fans of these 3? Also, if you weren't aware, the state legislature is also reported to be hoping mad - is not just DeSantis by a long shot.
Ideally elected politicians should have no room in college athletics but when the CFP Committee leaves this many people hacked off, politics, and the courts, can be expected to get involved. Oh. if this weren't bad enough, we had some clowns visit DC the other day insisting that college sports cannot survive unless Congress gets involved.
I don't like it, but our country is such that most sides are so focused on having their own way that they are killing much of what is (has been) good about this country. So much so that we should now expect politics and scorched earth to be invoked with most every disagreement.

Macodi & other supporters of lil Ron ……. individuals might be moving to Florida, but none of those individuals are going there for jobs. That’s because new businesses are NOT moving to Florida, except for a few finance firms moving to Miami area.
Ron’s childish tactics with Disney are anti-business and have caused relocating businesses and new businesses to completely take Florida off of their radar screen. In the meantime Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina are knocking it out of the park with respect to economic development, new manufacturing, etc. Economic development authorities in Florida are dead in the water. No business will relocate there after seeing the BIG government precedent that Ron set with Disney.
And don’t tell me that Disney had some kind of tax holiday. Ron knows the truth. Disney built a municipality that has housed all of their entities on that municipality land since they first moved a brick decades ago. Disney created their own municipality and therefore governed themselves at the municipal level and provided their own services for water, sewer, fire, and electric. Fortunately we live in a country where a business is free to do so ……. until a petulant childish bureaucrat named Ron pops up and decides to attack that business from the governors mansion.
Keep the government out of my business.
