Put them out in the ag fields. They could still chant and complain while they pick the strawberries, plus they make a few bucks.

Problem solved.

Most vacuum companies have a 'gentle' gripper to pick fruits, vegetables, etc. Agriculture is already heavily automated, and it's only going to increase. You either advance or get left behind, funny so many of our big brains want to rely on glorified slave labor as opposed to technological innovation.

Some fruits and vegetables are too delicate, irregular in shape, or difficult to handle by machines, so they still require human labor to harvest. Here are some common ones:

Fruits:
Blueberries: Often harvested by hand because they're small, fragile, and can be easily damaged by machines.

Strawberries: While some farms use machines, strawberries are particularly sensitive and can be crushed, so many farms still rely on manual picking.

Grapes: For table grapes, especially high-end varieties, hand-picking is preferred to avoid bruising or damaging the fruit.

Apples: Some apple varieties, especially those grown on trees with uneven branches or in orchards that are too steep for machinery, still require human pickers.

Cherries: Due to their delicate nature and the risk of bruising or damaging the fruit, cherries are still hand-picked on most farms.

Citrus: Oranges, lemons, and limes often require hand-picking, especially when the trees are short or when picking needs to be done in a way that avoids damaging the fruit or tree.

Avocados: These are usually picked by hand to avoid damage, and to ensure they are harvested at the correct stage of ripeness.

Peaches and Nectarines: These fruits are fragile and can bruise easily, so hand-picking is common.

Vegetables:
Asparagus: This is a delicate crop that’s traditionally harvested by hand to prevent damage to the spears.

Tomatoes: While some tomatoes (especially those for processing) are harvested mechanically, many high-quality tomatoes, especially for fresh markets, are still hand-picked to avoid bruising.

Leafy Greens (like Lettuce, Spinach, Kale): These are often hand-harvested, as machines can tear or bruise the leaves, affecting quality.

Broccoli: Although it can be machine-harvested in some settings, picking broccoli is often done by hand for higher quality, especially when the heads are still tightly packed and need to be handled carefully.

Peas: Like beans, peas are usually hand-picked to ensure they are in their prime condition and avoid damage to the pods.

Artichokes: These are harvested by hand due to their delicate nature, and because each flower head needs to be carefully cut from the plant.

Bell Peppers: Hand-picking is common, as they are fragile and easily damaged by mechanical harvesting methods.

Carrots: While large-scale commercial farms sometimes use machines, hand-harvesting is still common in certain regions to preserve quality.

Other Considerations:
Orchards and vineyards: Generally, areas with irregular terrain, or crops grown for high-end markets, are more likely to require manual labor.

Ripeness: Some fruits need to be harvested at just the right stage of ripeness, which is something that a machine may not be able to consistently gauge. Human pickers can inspect and determine the perfect time to harvest.

Machines are advancing in sophistication, but for many crops, there’s still no substitute for the human touch, especially when it comes to delicate or high-quality produce.

It's going to be like anything else, certain varieties, etc. will stay with hand picking, but the high volume stuff will be automated.

Funny they have asparagus on there, I grow it and that would be the easiest thing ever to automate.

Difficult environment from terrains, to temperatures, to humidity, to dirt - sand - grit etc.

Specialized machinery that leads to lower asset utilization

Equipment and labor must be highly mobile

High Skilled operators and maintenance technicians with seasonal utilization

High initial capital investment

Risky ROI IMO

manufacturing facilities. And you aren't dealing with adhesives and corrosive lubricants. Terrain isn't an issue for the drones, and most places have to navigate the terrain with equipment as is.

Everything is designed as dummy proof as possible, I'm sure most keep some maintenance techs on year round anyway. That can also be contracted out as the market grows. That also builds up additional industries around those farms, spare parts suppliers, mechanics, etc. Rising tide lifts all ships sort of deal.

High initial capital investment, but it would be pretty quick payback. Most manufacturers figure on $40-$60k cost per operator a year, even cutting that down to $20k to account for illegal labor it's still a chunk of change. Let's say we've got 500k immigrants working the fields in the US right now...Which is probably a very low figure, but it's what I've historically seen. That's $10 billion a year spent on immigrant agriculture labor. That can buy a shitton of automation.
