Oklahoma, Texas, Michigan, etc. I wouldn't be worried about NIL at all.
When you're a fan or alumnus of a relatively small state school without the tradition nor fundraising abilities of those above, and a relatively new elite football power, it worries me.

Re: Now that USC bought best WR / CFB in death spiral

College FB is not just on the Hell-bound train for the also-ran schools. The 'big name / big money' schools are also on those rails, but may not know it yet.
The death spiral has begun. Here's the trajectory:
Step 1: The fans of 'also ran' schools (let's use Pitt) realize that any stud player which they recognize through good film study and then sign (through hard work + some luck) will leave via the portal to go to the "NIL promised land" schools.
Step 2: The fans of 'also ran' schools (OK, it will be "Pitt" from now on) lose interest in CFB because they realize that any chance of a superior season and the excitement that goes with it is gone. The Pitt fans largely stop going to games, stop donating to the Panther Club, and stop watching CFB on TV. To them (in the words of B.B.King), "The Thrill is Gone." Pitt drops back to a lower FB classification.
Step 3: TV ratings suffer an overall steep decline ... even though the fans of the few lucky "big name / big money" schools which can fund massive NIL deals are living in "high cotton." (Let's use "USC" and "Bama" as the representative "big name / big money" schools.) Athletic facilities, coaching and player development programs, programs to help CFB players outside of FB such as our PAW program, lose their funding, and with it the attraction of CFB to HS athletes.
Step 4: Declining TV ratings impact 'conference deals' which help to prop up USC. Ever-poorer quality of competition makes the USC games boring. USC can schedule more games among the Bama and its twins. But the overall national appeal of CFB just ain't what it used to be. CFB to the remaining USCs and Bamas of the world becomes similar to what Polo represents to Harvard and Yale. Exciting for the USC / Bama --- Harvard / Yale fans, but not much to the rest of the world.
Step 5: NFL quality declines. If CFB produces fewer skilled players, then the NFL will suffer.
SUMMARY: The USCs and Bamas of the world will, due to the lack of a coherent program by the NCAA, create their own demise as far as even most of their own fans giving a shizz about the new boring CFB.

or, The 10-12 "elite" programs emerge...

and a few others with huge alumni bases follow. Michigan, USC, Texas A&M, Bama, but also UCF, FIU, University of Illinois, Georgia State, ASU, Minnesota.
Eventually, schools with huge enrollments and Alumni bases become the destination for College coaches and administrators who know how to build a football program. You'll just have an NFL junior league.
However, some of these kids will make enough in college that they won't really GAS about the NFL.

Nobody will compete with the Texas, Michigan, and Ohio State's of the world. Texas fans are looking at what A&M pulled this year and thinking "that's cute" as they get ready to blow them out next year.
Those schools (and maybe 1-2 more) will be like Kiffin predicted----the NFL without a salary cap.

Whether 3 - 4 or 10 - 12, it matters little.
The wealthy few will be supporting their CFB team, but the rest of the country won't care. TV ratings will plummet, HS player quality (i.e., FB skills) will plummet, and the wealthy few programs will be praying that their big time boosters will cough up more jack to pay off their Taj Mahal athletic facilities.
In between catching some flounder or whiting at the coast ... or some small mouth bass in the East Coast hills ... I'll cynically laugh my ### off when hearing the news that the 'chosen dozen' are demolishing their FB facilities due to disrepair and no money to maintain them.
I sure hope that Clemson's brain trust delays major new expenditures (yeah yeah, the new Scoreboard is a done deal) and harbors our money to maintain the existing infrastructure.
Look, the 2023 and maybe 2024 seasons may still be interesting, but the NIL Hades Bound Train is speeding down the tracks. Unless the NCAA gets some real brains and some real courage (Wizard of Oz, anyone?) then in the lyrics sung decades ago by Ozzy Osbourne ... "Satan laughing, spreads his wings."

I can't believe I'm saying this, but it's getting close.

"NIL" is just the cherry on top. I was in favor of NIL and regret it. David Hale (I think) had a great thread discussing how deals like this aren't really NIL, they are just pay to play by a different name.
Over the past 10(?) years, the playoff, more replay, larger conferences, more TV-driven game setup, transfer portal, COVID, the cost, and family obligations have all led to me watching less college football and enjoying the sport less overall. I always believed I would live to see Clemson win another Natty. We won two, so the rest is gravy.
I am wary of blaming the "media" but it seems like there are a lot of writers/talking heads who offer suggestions on how to improve the game (which always seem to benefit their employers), those changes make it worse, and those same people offer more suggestions.
If the top revenue teams really do split away from the rest of college football to form a pay for play league, I'd rather Clemson remain in the more traditional organization. We've proven that we can win at the highest level. We have nothing left to prove. I'd rather us stay committed to a more traditional college football model.

The success has been great, fun, special, etc......I've enjoyed the wins, but I've hated the changes that came with the wins.
Gimme Tommy Bowden and 8-5 or 9-4 all day long if if means the corporate d-bags drop out of IPTAY and season tix (and good parking) are reasonable again, Clemson is no longer the dream school du jour for the entire Mid-Atlantic seaboard, rent downtown drops to a point where local restaurants outnumber chains, and Tom Winkopp has to demolish all his crappy apartment buildings downtown because there aren't enough people to fill them.

that can provide that type of cash to players.
Requirement - must be a southern school, prob gotta be SEC.
Bama is in the picture obviously as Saban might just tire of this coaching stuff, but assuming that ain't happening for a few years, I think Texas would be high on the list. They will get rid of Sark if he repeats what he just did, especially if they could get Dabo.

Who knows what Dabo is really thinking but
May 3, 2022, 8:09 AM
|
|
Dabo isn't built for the NFL. His formula won't work there. You can argue that college football is a cutthroat business, but it doesn't hold a candle to the NFL in that regard. I just don't see him being a success there, and it doesn't help that he's not really what I would call a masterful or innovative Xs & Os guy. He's very much in the mold of Bobby Bowden...another guy I don't think would have thrived in the league.
I also don't see Texas as a choice for Dabo. Austin is the one tiny island in Texas where there's a far more liberal attitude. It just doesn't have that religious conservative setting that Dabo would seem much more comfortable in. I could be wrong, but let's be honest...HOW OFTEN DOES THAT HAPPEN???
