Clemson lost to Maryland that day 21 - 24.
This was the 22nd season under coach Frank Howard. The team finished the year with a record of 5–5 (3–3 in conference and fourth place finish).

Noticed several things..

1. Team in White! 2. Hardly any fans on The HiLL. 3. Banner said Blue Notes playing that night. 4. AID Bob Bradley can be seen at left top of Hill in dark pants & tie. 5. No PAW on helmet!
Oh..6. Rat Caps on many students!

This was a little before my time...

In fact, I wasn't even born yet.
However, growing-up, there was a man living in our neighborhood who played for Coach Howard at Clemson and he kept his old helmet hanging on a nail on his carport wall. His name was Joe Anderson.

Joe Anderson was one of the first Clemson QBs that I remember. Tall and lanky. Not a phenom but serviceable.

Just read the message about Joe Anderson. Not everyone knows, but Joe was an outstanding basketball player at Greenwood SC High School. He played AND started all those years while averaging over 29 ppg for his career. He also led the team in rebounding as he was 6 foot 5 inches tall. If we needed a basket, the ball was given to Joe. He had offers for full basketball scholarships everywhere in the country, but he loved football AND Clemson so he chose both. I don't know why he didn't play basketball at Clemson but maybe Coach Howard discouraged it because Joe always had bad ankles and had to have them taped for practice and games for at least the two years that I played on the varsity. He also had diabetes and passed away at an early age years ago.

After posting my message I neglected to say that Joe started in basketball on the varsity for FIVE years.

The Clemson carpet back in '61 ran all the way from the top of the hill to the bottom. And they left it on the hill for the entire game. I can remember hiding under the carpet when it hailed at the Georgia game.
For 50 cents, we could sit on the hill and watch the game; however most of the time was spent just sliding down the hill on a piece of cardboard!

My all time favorite Clemson football picture. Especially of color pictures. My favorite black and white photo is of Clemson scoring from inside the 5 yard line during one of the last couple of Big Thursday games. Thanks for all the pics and memories!

Well there you go, the current trend for Hill attendance is just working itself back down to its origins. Everything old is new again as they say.
