I have a theory
Sep 9, 2022, 9:34 PM

It seems as though there are a certain group of posters, call them pumpers or whatever. But anyway, no matter what the honest criticism of the program, it's the same few folks that pump anything positive but refuse to acknowledge anything that deserves criticism.
I mean look at the offense last year. It was close to the bottom of the country and the excuses kept coming.
I look at RB recruiting and we haven't recruited a single top 100 RB recruit in the country in two years but there is a crowd who defends that which is indefensible.
My theory (or guess) is that the Clemson social media folk who are awesome at their job by the way (and thank God) are flooding TNET. Think of them as like Russian bot folk.
I mean I would do it if I were in charge of Clemson's social media. But critical opinions are not.
My wonder is not if they are out there but just how many of our posters are those types.

Agreed! A bunch of old men who tuck in their shirts with shorts on a Saturday morning. They remember the 90s so they are so happy with Dabo they will accept no criticism.

Shipley was last year depending on what you consider 2 years, if you consider this and next then no. Tbf gallman, Etienne, basically all of our top guys but spiller havent been elite recruits. And our top recruit feaster did nothing. Coaching has done a great job at RB through the years imo

I follow recruiting very closely, maybe you should re read where you literally replied 21 and 22 which you would be factually incorrect as Shipley was the 2nd rated RB

Top 100 RBs in the nation we have or will have on campus from each RB recruiting class:
2018 - no one 2019 - no one 2020 - Pace 2021 - Ship, Mafa 2022 - no one 2023 (commits or realistic prospects) - so far no one
Now, if you can defend this RB recruiting trend then you're the pumpest pumper that ever pumped!

Why stop there? After 2012 when Ellington left 2013 CJ Davidson- not highly recruited at all 2014-16 Gallman (only thrown in for Nkemdiche) 2017- feaster, ETN, and other combo solid running game 2018-20 ETN non rated in top 200 21 plus Shipley mafah pace etc
My point was we do well with developing RBs and not many I listed were top recruits. Just my opinion, defensive Daisy

Mafah and Shipley weren't top 100RB? Coulda fooled me.
A friend of mine refers to the recruiting ranking services as "fat hot dog eaters." I doubt Dabo or any other top 50 coach pays much attention to them.
But, there are guys who have made a good living setting up pay sites to spout what the dog eaters say.

It's not the same people pumping all the time.

If there one group which consist of the same people year after year it's the dumpers. The only two changes to that group is when their pulse drops embarrassing low the get scoks and a do over. The other change is the coots showing up with new handles and troll.
I defend Clemson almost all the time but last season set me in a place I have not been since before Dabo came. I was as frustrated with our lack of offense and defended the WRs and offensive linemen because the quarterback was so poor at performing a reasonable qb's job that it accentuated the least misstep by both groups.
I still see WRs and TEs running free in the secondary and appreciate that some may take the play off if DJ is still behind center. I'm not making excuses for them but being a WR with DJ at QB is like peeing in a pair of black slacks. You get that warm feeling because you peed down your leg but no one notices.
So no, Clemson faithfuls know Dabo's MO when it comes to replacing a WB. He didn't wave a magic wand and put DW or TL in the start in the first game and didn't fail by doing so.

before lunch than you children do in a week. For lack of something productive to do I harvested an om617 MB 5cyl diesel and transmission from a 1984 300SD and put it in a 1985 380SE body. I rewired the harness to make all the components work, stripped and refinished the interior including the dash, learned to mig weld and cut and replaced half a dozen rust spots and am planning on building a paintbooth to disassemble the body and restore it to original.
I have 5 grand in the, leather dye and softners, prep and primers and the body primer, base coat and clear.
All that stuff I learned after retiring 22 years ago so don't come in here talking about age being a drawback. I've been learning my entire life. After two quarters at Greenville Tech I finished a degree in Construction Science in three years with 4 children when I enrolled and 5 when I graduated.
My life embarrasses people who sucked mama's teat until they were 25.
All that is true. I'm just a grumpy old man who can't tolerate tomfoolery. NOW GET OFF MY LAWN you young whippersnapper.

That is awesome. There is nothing wrong with criticism if it is not just dumb, biased, prejudiced, racially motivated rants. Just look at the posts tonight about Louisville, who is winning on the road. Does anyone really think these folks know anything about Louisville football?

*Like to enjoy the good times rather than b***h about what we have no control over *Remember Ken Hatfield *Prefer to give guys more than one year to prove themselves *Think this is the Golden Age of Clemson football and want to enjoy it while we can *Remember getting the #1 all-purpose back just two years ago, according to Rivals *Wonder if entitlement has taken over the Clemson fan base like a plague *Remember Tommy West
I'm pretty sure that Dabo and staff aren't perfect. I'm absolutely certain they would own that imperfection.
Call me a pumper, that's fine. Football is supposed to be an enjoyable distraction. I'm not sure how much more enjoyable Clemson football could've been over the last 8 years.

And I remember Danny. Been at this for 40+ years.
The only thing that is constant is change. I don't look at 2018 and think that we're the same now.
Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State are surpassing us. Why is that?
You need to be able to step back and take a critical look at the current direction. Maybe it's because I am a math teacher who understands Calculus and instantaneous change. Maybe it's how I can see how fast things can spiral downhill.
Calling it like you see it isn't being a dumper. Always calling it sunnier than you see it is a pumper.
I firmly believe an honest discussion needs honesty, right?

Mr. Smarter-Than-Others Calculus guy.
I'd prefer to let things play out. Week 1 we look like we're behind OSU, UGA, Bama (and I'd probably add ND).
But we likely have the #1 defense in the land, an amazing D-line coming in, the #1 QB from the last class and a 5-star in the next class. Not a single player transferred after Spring ball. These are facts.
The 2 freshmen WRs sound legit. And I firmly believe that Brinningstool will be among the best TEs to ever play at Clemson. Let's give CJ more than 1 year before we write him off, shall we?
It's not just the past that looks good, it's the future. Everyone wanted Ladson, Ngata, Williams and DJU. Ladson is gone and maybe the others will pan out. Maybe they won't.
But most of the pundits still have us going to the playoff. Historically Dabo's teams improve over the course of the season. DJ is much improved over last year. The line is deeper and will come together (barring injuries).
I simply don't understand why many in the fan base spend so much time staring at the negatives (or perceived negatives).
At the end of the day it's a game. Last I checked games were meant to be enjoyable. But I don't teach Calculus, so I could be wrong.

I am not saying I am smarter because I know calculus. Just that I can look at a football game or a trend and be objective. Math helps you think critically because numbers don't lie.
I agree that we are behind in week 1 and things can change and trend up. I think we both want that, right? I am just commenting on the data I have now and we have a lot of data on offensive trends.
Relying on two freshmen WR stinks of misses in recruiting or developmental issues in the years prior. Do you not agree?
The defense and special teams look good so far but you need three teams to be playing well if you want to be a playoff contender.
My main point is that a lot of posts seem to be disingenuous.

Calling things great when they suck you lose credibility.
Calling things bad when they are bad you will not lose credibility with people who are able to think critically. It's pretty simple.

The whole issue is because we were perfect in 18, the rank file (no and on purpose) think we will be perfect every year and if we are not it is our fault rather than the team that beat us just being better. I was in Miami in 81 before most of the people on this site were thought of and that team would have beaten both the 16 and 18 teams. Football is not about where you rank in any stat except winning and we are pretty dadgum good in that stat. Enjoy the wins and accept the occasional lose with class.

I watched the 81 team, and they would have been boat raced by our 2018 team. 81 would have dominated the trenches, absolutely; but teams back then had Huge LBs that would have never covered the 2018 slot receivers or Etienne running routes out of the backfield. The 2018 DL could have held their own against the run, which was 85% or more of offensive production back then.
