Sep 29, 2013, 5:06 PM

I was at an FCS game yesterday and I'm pretty sure the away team got royally screwed by the refs.

Before it touches the ground yes you can call for a fair catch. After it hits the ground fair catch signal is void.

ok then the refs screwed

eastern new mexico yesterday. not just once either

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think you can fair catch it off of the first bounce now

days. Pretty sure that is the new rule.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not if it is bounced off the ground, which is why kickers

Sep 29, 2013, 5:22 PM

Kick it into the ground to bounce it up

Normally when they kick an onside kick the ball is driven directly into the gound and what looks like a pop up is actually a high bounce so that can not be fair caught since its already hit the ground.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, but it is an interesting question, because a kickoff is

a free ball, unlike a punt which belongs to the receiving team unless touched by them. Punt teams catch fair-caught balls all the time, but of course all that does is down it. If a kick off is fair caught, could a kick off team still catch it, and own it, if they don't interfere in doing so? Purely hypthetical question, as I don't see how that could happen, but there you go.

no this happened last night

Eastern New Mexico at UIW. UIW led 33-26 and ENMU was going for the onside kick. the kicker popped it up in the air high, a UIW player called for a fair catch and the ENMU played ran in and scooped it out of the air before the player who called the fair catch could get it, but he did not actually touch the player who called the fair catch. Is that interference? the ref called that it was

Sounds like EM's ball, unless by rule the "free ball" aspect

Sep 29, 2013, 8:17 PM

goes away on a fair catch. Which means it has to then be back on again if it hits the ground, or else teams would just fair catch all onside kicks. Very convoluted, or the refs blew it, or both. The weird rule is propably the one that all kick offs are free balls. Seems to an archaic rule that is leading to this. Should treat it like a punt. Seems artificial as it now is.

You can fair catch an Onside Kick. You can Fair Catch it off the first bounce but not the second. I believe the rule states it must be above shoulder height.
