Tony Elliott: I know it's trendy to attack the guy right now
Oct 18, 2021, 1:10 PM
|
|
but it seems lame to keep piling on. Sure, he deserves a lot of criticism but they all do.
We've had a pretty similar offensive scheme since 2011. In 2015, it changed from mostly Chad Morris to a group effort of TE, JS, DS, and Streeter. It has remained a group effort through today.
This group watches film all week and gets plays together that they think will work against specific personnel as in the D is in a 3 or 4 man front or when they blitz.
I say stick with this group as they face much adversity for the first time. Many times cream will rise to the top.
As for Elliott, I think he's a smart guy with an engineering degree who attended the Air Force Academy Prep School. He doesn't deserve the brunt of the criticism. He should be included in the criticism.

I mean you might find it acceptable to have the #120 ranked offense in the country with a roster full of four and five star players, but most of us expect better than that from one of the most expensive offensive staffs in the country. Whatever they are doing clearly isn’t working. This mythical get-right game is always going to be just out of reach.

because his name is in front of OC. If one of my employees screws up, it's on me to get it corrected. If they keep making the same mistake and I refuse to change something...well then it's time for me to face the music.
I'll say that more emphasis needs to be put on Caldwell and Grisham though for sure. The OL has been pitiful for years and the WR's have really dropped off since Jeff Scott left. Don't get me started on Coch Spilluh either. Way to completely mismanage your talent pool there. They were really going to continue with theRS Mafah after Lin-J transferred? That was dumb. He's one of the best I've seen in a while with how hit hits a seam and runs. For what we're doing right now with now passing game and a horrible OL, his talents are more suited for this scheme than Shipley is.

my parents actually ######, but I have a pretty good idea they have. No one ever has privy to all of the info, but by that same accord, you can't tell me that Tony Elliot is out there coming up with new plays, studying other systems that work in the offseason and learning new things.

Spiller's dog house...TE never had a problem with him...no playing time...The plays he gets in on he does well...
You don't find it odd that he never had an issue before and then his senior year when could have transferred last year, he decides to come back and then boom everything changes once Spiller's there?

You don't think Dixon was in the doghouse last year?....

Below are his stats this year and back.
His carries and receptions were down significantly in 2020 vs 2019 and much more as a % of total snaps (all RB carries were down a little YOY). T
ATT YDS AVG TD LNG REC YDS AVG TD LNG FUM LST 10 48 4.8 0 16 2 7 3.5 1 14 0 0 42 190 4.5 2 21 3 21 7.0 0 12 0 0 104 635 6.1 6 32 14 121 8.6 0 55 0 0 62 547 8.8 5 65 1 41 41.0 0 41 0 0
Then you throw in Shipley coming in this year. The dynamic was different and it's believable that his attitude and work was significantly different too.
So, as I said before, unless you know the real situation, you can't make the claims you made.

I've called em as I've seen em with Elliott for a couple years now, and I've been right more than not. That's about it.
I don't touch Brent Venables discussions because a) the guy is doing an amazing job and b) his schemes are flat out next level---I can't discuss them intelligently beyond a 30k ft view.
I played offense though so I get that side of the ball better, and our shortcomings have been so glaring and basic for a couple seasons that they're not difficult to discuss. Somehow, and I really don't know how, this affects you on a personal level and rather than actually having an enjoyable discussion about it, you go into angry old man mode and just declare FOS or try to shut it down by acting like I think I'm some coaching guru.
Ignore the posts if they get you so fired up and dammmm sure dont' call me into a post if you don't want to hear from me.

Yep....and this may be a hot take, but...

I see a fair bit of improvement over the last 2 games.
The running game was great on Friday. We were ripping off 5-7 yds on 1st down. Then follow it by a missed block and dropped pass.
He had some really good calls that just weren't executed. The "offsides screen" play was called at a perfect time and set-up to be a huge gain and possibly a score....except our 3 OL's let 1 guys run right between them and blow up the play for a loss.
He's working in the screen game now and the players won't execute them.
And everyone keeps talking about the OL, but the WR group has been missing blocking assignments all year. That is something we've always been good at. The coaches didn't just all of a sudden forget how to coach.
Yes, execution is part coaching, but coaching only goes so far. Frankly, I see a lot of bad luck factored in to some bad play.
The only really poorly called series was running the QB power 3 times in a row at the end. I could see it coming from the TV, so you know the defense saw it coming. I felt for sure the 2nd or 3rd one was going to be a fake QB power with a quick hit to the TE running down the seam. I'd be curious if Elliott just doesn't think our OL can hold pentation enough to run that play.
It wouldn't surprise me if our offense looks sluggish against Pitt again and it wouldn't surprise me if we blow them out. I don't think it's being overly rosy to say we were a few mistakes away from beating 'cuse by 3 scores.

I'm just sharing what I observed watching the game twice.
There is a big difference in football between getting beat physically or schematically versus making stupid mistakes, uncharacteristic drops, etc...in critical situations.
I don't see many of our players getting whipped on a regular basis when I watch the games back. Do you?

since that's the position I played. I don't see the OL getting whipped very often.
I see a lot of missed assignments...players going unblocked, etc... When we get the hat on the right man, we normally do well up front.
On 2 QB powers in a row the center was covered up and the right guard had someone in the 4 gap almost close to being covered up and the center blocked down with the left guard. There is no blocking scheme where that is the correct block. And they did it twice in a row. That communication and not physical.
They ran the same play with the D in the same formation and blocked it correctly and DJ went for 12 yds.

deserves every bit of it and Dabo deserves any upstream flow for sticking his head in the sand about the issue. Been saying for a couple years that our offense has underperformed the talent we had on hand and it's biting us squarely in the arrse right now.
We can play the "yeah, but weren't the past few years awesome" game all we want, but a top notch program doesn't go from best to worst in a single season with the talent we have without some massive holes in the boat.

Josh Jacobs, Nagee Harris, Damion Harris, Jerry Jeudy, Devanta Smith, AWESOME OL, though UGA'S may be as good. You're just looking silly now.

year but, when you actually start saying we should fire people at this point, you totally lose me, and seem sort of unhinged.

does someone want that?

I mean, I'm sure SOMEONE wants him gone today by 5pm, but I haven't heard it. I want the guy gone as much as anyone, but I think it would be silly to not wait until the end of the season.
Also, I'm under no illusions that the odds of Dabo making the change even then are anything other than infinitesimal.

this should really be the only argument

now that we have some games under our belt and stats to back it up. look how we compare to other programs.
that is horrible. embarrassing. flat out unacceptable. especially given the talent we've been bringing in and the $ we pay this coaching staff.
we can all #### and moan about the why - but the responsibility for all of this falls on the OC and then on Dabo if it doesn't get corrected.
judging by our performance following a bye week, it ain't getting corrected.

Plus we have real live actual former players calling

out the play-calling now. I'm not sure what other evidence people are looking for. Don't believe me? Fine. Don't believe your lying eyes? Fine. Commentators who played and coached professionally have noted it. OUR OWN PLAYERS WHO PLAYED FOR THESE COACHES HAVE NOTED IT. Deer baby Jesus in heaven what does it take to get past the "well the players just need to play harder and better and that's it" argument?

We are the worst offense in the ACC with much, much more talent than any other team and a fantastic defense. Its totally inexcusable.

At least for this year. He owes $2m to Trevor, Rodgers, Powell, and ETN for last year.

like they deserve much credit for 2015-20. They just didn't roll the ball out there at practice and let the players do it on their own. There are too many great players and coaches on other teams for that. The comeback against Ohio St. In 19 and the beat down over ND in 20 shows how well our offensive staff has prepared us in the past. In 19 against OSU, we switched to a screen game with Etiene and a running QB. Against ND last year, we ran Trevor, and then demolished them with the pass. Great offensive coaching.

TE didn't forget how to coach all of a sudden. I'll admit..

he can be a bit vanilla at times. But we've had success with him too.
As for DJ he's not DW or TL. But we don't have Caleb (whatever his name is) from OU to come off the bench. I read a stat earlier where he was 17 for 25 Friday at one point and 3 of those misses were obvious drops not contested.
I just keep going back to the Oline. IMO they blow.
Shoot me because I'm a glass half full type guy. Hey if it's half full you can had more tequila.

I think we are seeing who the driving force behind our offensive play calling was.
Scott is stinking it up pretty good at USF; I wonder if he wants his old job back?

I think it's a bunch of problems...
Oct 18, 2021, 5:15 PM
|
|
1.) Talent level-- I don't see a ton of NFL talent on the offensive side. Compare with years past and it's a pretty stark contrast. Pretty much every position is either young/inexperienced or a downgrade from where we've been in years past.
2.) Youth/inexperience--Other than Ross, we don't have a ton of experience in our WR core nor do we have a ton of experience on the OL and the ones that do are playing out of position too often (bockhorst).
3.) Lack of speed-- We have tall possession/red zone type WRs, but we have no one for the slot like Rodgers or Renfrow that can always get open over the middle. We don't look explosive at any position.
4.) Injuries-- We've been pretty lucky in the past with this, but we're making up for it this year.
5.) Scheme-- With the talent we have, I think our offense is better designed for an old-school under center, run heavy/play-action style offense but that hasn't been our identity so we don't run it (or can't). So a bit of square peg/round hole situation.
6.) OL being subpar-- #2/#3 affecting this I think.
7.) Coaching--Recruiting philosophy as well as misses/scheme issues and execution problems.
8.) DJ. He's showing some progress, but he's not playing as he did against BC/ND. I don't know why and won't speculate, but his play is clearly down here.
I feel like UGA is basically the better version of our offense but they have a top-tier OL and some explosive talent at the TE position.
I'm sure there are probably more or that I may be wrong on some of this stuff. I'm no expert so this is my message board quality opinions.
