He's one of the better LF the Braves have had
May 2, 2013, 12:02 PM

But he wasn't better than Carty, IMO. You could make a very reasonable argument for Klesko being first-team all-time for Atlanta.

Murphy played 85 games at catcher in his career.

I don't consider him a catcher. Andruw was a better player than Murph.

Or in my house. But if we're making a fantasy baseball team, it's Andruw, who has a borderline HOF case himself (and a better one than Murph, IMO).

If Dale didn't play on some of the worst Braves teams ever
May 2, 2013, 12:12 PM

I'm betting you would see a ton more R.B.I.'s and HR's. The Braves had exactly one bat in the lineup with Murphy played, and he still managed to put up numbers.

in OBP. Andruw has a larger edge in SLG. The real separating factor is that, while Murphy was a very good defensive player, Andruw was a transcendent defensive player, probably one of the top two or three in the history of baseball in CF (maybe THE best).

Probably watched at least 1,000 games Andruw played. He's about twice as good as any other I've watched. The metrics like him better than Mays, though faulty they may be.

He was no Mays or Jones, but he was no slouch. And I'd much rather have his bat in the middle of the lineup than Andruw's.

At his best, Murphy was a better hitter than Andruw, but Andruw seems to have accumulated an equivalent offensive career.

Maddux once said AJ is worth one run a game because he played so shallow and took away so many singles.

Component of defense than range. Players at neither position tend to do much "bobbling" of grounders. What matters most is how many balls you can get to.

May 2, 2013, 12:13 PM
|
|
1994 (strike shortened) - 16-6, 1.56 ERA 1995 - 19-2, 1.63 ERA
In fact, his ERA was sub 2.50 every season from 1992-1998 except for one (2.72). And this was supposedly the height of the steroid era.
Wow...just wow...
