In my lifetime, Brad has been our most criticized and disliked coach. Maybe Rick Barnes, but he got hate because he left us.

and so the manner in which he was forced out was naturally going to make it difficult for just about anyone who replaced him, which is one reason Bobby Robinson was so opposed to Lennon firing Coach Ford.
The fact that Ken Hatfield was not a good coach or recruiter, and extripated many of the relationships the staff has established with high school coaches, just exacerbated the problem.

Clemson fans want Clemson to do well. If Brad can win more and make the Tournament consistently then fine. Clemson fans in general aren’t as personally invested in Brad specifically like you are. They want what’s best for Clemson.

I know a few people have posted about meeting Brad before and it was negative but I’ve met and seen him on several occasions and he’s always been very nice.
I’ve wanted him let go in years past but never because I hated him. Only because of the results on the court.
And to answer your question I expect the answer from most people to be Hatfield.

separation / discord in the Clemson Family. And there was social media - although not as prevalent as today - to voice this displeasure. Hatfield & West didn't have the pleasure of getting social media thrown into the mix.
The level of animosity Tommy Bowden created in the Family is similar to what Brownlee has done / is doing.
I don't hate the guy - he's just not good at what he does and we needed to make a change 3 to 5 years ago.
As it stands right now - I hope he wins every single basketball game he ever coaches for us. Every single one.

Great comment!
I think the criticism of Brad Brownell is very similar to the criticism that Tommy Bowden received. It's because (especially with Tommy) they were reasonably popular hires and seem like very nice people. Everyone wanted them to succeed. And every time it looks like they are near the top, it is like they turn into Lucy when Charlie Brown is trying to kick the football.
So I think that in both cases, it was/is this building expectation because you keep thinking you're finally getting somewhere and then taking a step back.
Ken Hatfield was loathed, seemingly from the day he walked in the door, simply because he wasn't Danny Ford. And some will still disagree, but the man could coach. He took over an Air Force program that, at best, had been mediocre for thirty years (Bill Parcells - yes, that one - went 3-8 the year before Hatfield took over) and improved it over his five seasons, with a 10-2 record and second consecutive bowl in his last year there. At Arkansas, he averaged nine wins a year and won the SWC his last two seasons there (I suspect he was willing to leave because of a lack of bowl success).
So Ken came to Clemson and, in four years, went 10-2, 9-2-1, 5-6, and 8-3, before being shown the door. He ran a VERY boring offense. But he was successful over the years and... well, was a more successful football coach than BB is hoops coach and was run out of town after only four seasons.
Tommy West was a very popular hire because supporters wanted a guy from the Clemson family - he'd been an assistant under Danny Ford and came over after one year as HC at UTC. West was awful. He won the Peach Bowl with Hatfield's team, but otherwise was mostly mediocre before crashing with a 3-8 season and getting fired. Point being, West was a bad coach but still not hated as much as Hatfield!

Hatfield was the worst offensive strategist that ever held a playbook upside down. He deserved the negative comments and a lot more. Brad Brownell is a good coach, and totally undeserving of the vitriol that permeates this site. He is criticized mostly by people who don't support the program, don't attend the games, and really know very little about basketball.

Red Parker was pretty bad! Can you imagine Clemson ever hiring the guy from Citadel again?
Hootie Ingram... talk about failing up! 12-21 at Clemson, before getting into administration, AD at FSU and Alabama, where he hired Gene Stallings.

Well he followed a man in Oliver Purnell that everyone loved who won/got us to the dance. Then he follows that up with 1 good year out of every 5 where he makes the tourney. He then gets an extension after that 1 good season and we live in misery for the next 4 years. Rinse and Repeat
Thats Brad in a nutshell

I never did dislike Hatfield. He should have been a little smarter than to be the first to follow Ford imo. He had no chance with our fan base after all that went down. Came from Arkansas and that was a good program so I was pretty pumped about getting him. Not sure what he done or said about the fans to make them strongly dislike him besides our slow decline. He started out good but it was fairly obvious early on he could not keep recruitment up to where we needed it to be to stay at least on par to where we were in the 80’s.
To answer the original question and I will go with dislike I would say our previous baseball coach( Lee). Was ecstatic when we got him but just seemed stale as a person and baseball dropped considerably. Shyatt was horrible as a coach, but honestly have never had a coach that I would say I hated. I like Brownell but not crazy about his program. Bowden was a different type guy but I can’t say I disliked the guy. We have been very fortunate to hire some quality people even though they may not have been quality coaches.
Hope I answered your question?

Not hate, just frustrated about results and personality
Jan 6, 2023, 5:21 PM

You can produce results like a Jim boeheim and have a grouchy personality. And be appreciated.
You can have a personality and be appreciated like Seth Greenberg. He won quite a bit, but not to their expectation.
You can be very charismatic like Dickie V and be mediocre.
What you can’t do, over 12 plus years is not have wins other than an occasional game AND not have much charisma or personality.
Brad is simply a decent man who has not broken out or shown great flashes , who is not charismatic.
The question is, do you enjoy being middle of the pack and happy when the ACC tanks and Clemson does not backup like other programs are doing? Would you rather flash like a VT or GT and then other years drop to the lower tier?
No hate, just want new leadership. Give someone else a try.

Does anyone remember Charley Pell? While credited with turning us around prior to Danny Ford, he also left us with 2 years of probation for violations that came to light in '82 and had also done the same kind of things at Florida that were uncovered during the same investigation leading to 2 years of probation there as well.
