are new to the ACC and are known as football schools have come in and won at Duke and UNC, and won ACC titles. Things we haven't done since helping to create the ACC way back in 1953.
Basketball is different than other sports. You have to be committed to winning and step up and pay big money for a serious coach. A program like Clemson will never break through without spending a lot of money and making a huge hire. We have the money and frankly it's stupid to spend 10's of millions to renovate Littlejohn if we aren't willing to spend $2.5 million to get a great coach.

true desire to win by the admin, NO REAL COMMITMENT to basketball, but I'm hoping Clements loves basketball half as much as football and thinks it's stupid to spend 10s of millions on a new facility them puss out on hiring a serious HC.

I am a Clemson grad '77, and there has never been any serious commitment to basketball. We always try to hire on the cheap and get by on the cheap, just like we are doing now with the Littlejohn remodel. We have been turned down by assistant coaches for our head coaching job because they felt there was no commitment. And the women's program is even more woeful!

If I remember correctly, LJ is being renovated pRimarily with revenue bonds....can't pay salary like that...
So what were seeing is, build the facility, then shell out big iptay dough for a coach on the premise of be the legendary coach at Clemson in one of the nicest/newest facilities
I agree though, it's tough to call us mediocre....against all ncaa maybe, ACC And power conferences, def the bottom tier

Wrong. 1st using bonds is smart, you can spend more money

now and pay it back with a very low fixed rate over decades off the revenue stream of the AD.
2nd we just got a $7 to $9 million per year raise with the new ESPN contract and with the expansion of the ACC and the ACC Network more money is on the way in the future.
3rd a winning program would generate far higher revenues and easily pay the extra $1 or $2 million extra for a big time coach.
4th IPTAY is sitting on over 40 million cash.
5th we are getting an extra $500k to $1m per year for the next 10 years just off the strong showing of the ACC in this years' NCAA tourney.
6th it would be insane to spend what we are about to spend on a new facility, but not use that to attract a great HC for an extra $2m/year! (which again we can easily afford and it would pay for itself)
Granted I'd stick with BB another 2 to 3 years while we upgrade the facilities and give him a little more time, but no significant improvement within 3 years and he has to go. Then we see IF our new pres and BOT are finally serious about basketball being more than an after thought at Clemson.
For the record, I was a huge BB fan and thought he was a good hire, but he has been very disappointing. Basketball ain't football. It only takes 1 great player or a few years to turn a program around. We're in the ACC for god's sake. There is no reason we can't consistently finish right behind UNC, Duke, and Louisville and every few years put a scare into them.

Just for conversation... who would you guys like to see here? Realistically.
I have heard Shaka Smart at VCU; But I would like to throw in the name Chris Mack at Xavier. Dreaming BIG, I would say Greg Marshall at Wichita State.

greater resources than Clemson (and just about anybody else, for that matter), but having said that, there is no reason at all that Clemson can't and should not expect to have a very good basketball program. Traditionally, for the most part, it just hasn't been enough of a priority at Clemson. That can change, and it should.

Texas one of the top 10 coaching jobs?
Mar 29, 2015, 9:09 PM
|
|
according to this guy on NBC
http://collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/03/28/rick-barnes-is-no-longer-the-head-coach-at-texas/
"And now the coaching carousel will kick into overdrive, because Texas is, at worst, one of the top ten jobs in the country."
really? does he mean one of the top ten openings? or top ten, period?
if the latter, i have a hard time buying that...
i understand that they have a huge budget, but i don't see it in the top 10;
i'd put at least 4 and maybe even 7 ACC schools ahead of it, some B1Gs, Kansas, Kentucky, UCLA....etc...

Top 20 job
probably Top 10 money
regardless, its a danged site better job than playing home games in LJ....renovated or not...and I hate saying that because 35 or 40 years ago, I thought Clemson was headed in the correct direction

They could easily be top 10 every year. Have you seen the talent Barnes has had while there? He grossly underachieved. They'd be a machine with the right coach, a Duke or Kentucky. It's scary how good they could be with Gregg Marshall.

like you that cherry pick dates and stats to make a point that easily gets crushed by reality.
Yea, they were tickled pink with Barnes back then, but he hasn't done sh!t since 2008.
Jack did great as our baseball coach his 1st 5 years but he has let the program collapse the past 5.
ASK your boss if you can sit on your ### the next 5 years since you killed it the previous 10. Get back to me with his response.

[ in reply to Texas one of the top 10 coaching jobs? ] |

Kentucky UCLA North Carolina Duke Kansas Ohio State Louisville Indiana Michigan Michigan State
Now I would drop the two Michigan schools from my list ... and add Virginia and Utah.
The longest a coach has stayed at Clemson is 10 years ... that by itself puts Clemson down the list.

is that yours or one your found?
i think there are decent arguments for Syracuse and Arizona as well
UVA is definitely a contender
Utah? that one catches me by surprise
i think it's easy to come up with 10 that most of us would rank ahead of Texas
as mentioned above, Texas definitely can offer top-10 money (maybe even top-5)

It's my list ... and it's also the list of the top schools in terms of NCAA tournament success 1939-2015.
The two Michigan schools occupy the #9 and #10 spots of the 1939-2015 list. So that and the hopeless winters in Michigan are why I would drop them.
Utah? Day trips to Yellowstone Park, great hiking, great Indian culture, great golfing. There's a lot to like there. Money? Money is not a factor; once one is at that level of coaching the money is ample everywhere. Texas money would be a lot ... and then you look around and you are in Texas. I'll take the ample money elsewhere.
Syracuse? The one time I was there the air stunk. One data point only - and a powerful data point.
Arizona? The terrain around Tucson is a moonscape ... not for me. It's also hot there. I prefer "not hot".
