Clarence Thomas - this is ugly...

When we hear about "draining the swamp" does that refer to justices accepting twenty years of luxury vacations from billionaires without disclosing it? This guy has effectively given Thomas millions of dollars worth of gifts over twenty years, donated large amounts to political organizations Ginni Thomas is affiliated with, etc. (One trip alone was worth more than twice what Thomas earns in a year serving on SCOTUS.)

remember. He's spent a lifetime carefully crafting an image of a man with no inherent advantages and no help from anybody who pulled himself up by his bootstraps, the American Way. He's almost completely full of shit. Enforcement of ethics typically hasn't been a problem with justices like it is with other politicians, because judges are usually smarter than your average Congressperson, and more cognizant that their position of power also portends some pretty serious responsibility, and appearance of fairness and justice are paramount.
Thomas makes a good case for why that enforcement needs to be more codified.

Curious to hear the MAGA response and how this fits the "drain the swamp" narrative.

I would certainly be critical of any SCOTUS judge raking it in like this. But the Thomas's are a special kind of corrupt. And Ginni Thomas seems to be completely nuts. Even Trump thought so!

it is unseemly, IMO, and, in any event, they are defenseless against such attacks. I don't like it when the left or the right does it. This is especially the case when we attempt to apportion blame to the judge/justice for what their family may or may not have done.

it should be decided at the state level, though. That has nothing to do with pro-anything, or Trump. Anymore stereotypes you want to throw?

Don't know. Now I'll ask, is this "swampy" or not.l?
I will probably bookmark your response for when you start hollering "corruption" or "drain the swamp" in future discussions.

You have at least admitted it's a bad look and you wouldn't do it. The rest of MAGA that was frothing at the mouth over "drain the swamp" is noticeably quiet. It's obvious that "drain the swamp" was lip service and that MAGA was never really serious about it. As I said, keeping this bookmarked for future discussions (Hunter Biiiiiiiiiiden).

There's nothing illegal about accepting gifts that are permitted by law. It's beyond ludicrous to think all justices don't accept these gifts!
In case you haven't noticed (likely), the Pubs are indeed draining the Swamp. It's well underway!
Try harder to be more informed. It's embarrassing to the board when you chime in. LOL

$500,000 trips go far beyond what one thinks of as an honorarium.
Do you not think that millions of dollars in gifts over twenty years would influence anyone?

Typical leftist thinking.
It’s all about having the power to set arbitrary standards for you guys.
In the absence of laws which set a limit on what gifts (whether actual money or in-kind gifts / benefits) can be accepted by a SCOTUS, liberals seek to apply arbitrary value thresholds, with any number above that arbitrary standard being a crime.

Any gifts of this kind from any political donors, and anyone who even remotely defends it is likely void of any integrity of their own.
Not sure how any American couldn't look at this and realize it's bad for our country.

Gawd, how virtuous you are? What a joke.
How can a SCOTUS participate in pay-to-play? They can't, period. Unless in the unlikely event a case the payer is involved with comes before the court.
This is 10,000% different than the Biden Crime Family accepting CCP $ when they can immediately give the payer what they wanted, like don't touch the CCP spy satellite until it has done its job. Don't look for the real cause of COVID. etc.
You lefties are devoid of any thought process.
Show me expense statements with dollar figures and emails confirming all such activities and I might give a chit. Otherwise, this is a hit job.

Clearly they can, and it's no surprise you see no problem with it if it involves "your team".

It’s called recusal.
Judges with a potential conflict of interest have an obligation to recuse themselves.
Litmus test political leanings of a judge are not the standard for conflict of interest.

Or any of the other congress-critters who have used the inside information from their job to enrich themselves. (Though they can all be voted out and don't have lifetime jobs.)
But say you had a case before SCOTUS, how would you feel if you knew that the guy who gave Thomas millions of dollars in trips over the years (and a half-mill to one of his wive's lobbying groups) was hoping the decision went the way of your opponent in the court?
