OK, I am officially confused.

I have been working under the premise that the only realistic way for FSU to leave the ACC in the next few years was to abolish the conference.

Now, it seems like people are seriously talking about some way for the GOR to be abolished and the conference stay intact. There is also some talk about figuring out a way for the conference to develop a plan of unequal distribution of revenue.

I don't see how either of those are realistic. No way are schools going to vote to give some of their money to FSU, Clemson and maybe a couple more schools.

And, instead of spending years and millions of dollars to fight the GOR in court, why not just vote to dissolve the conference?

I'm not attorney. I have no idea of the financial maze it would take to walk through abolishing the conference. But, it seems that should be what the talk is about. Unequal revenue and abolishing the GOR are just smokescreens, aren't they?

So, why is all the talk today about the schools exploring legal ways to abolish the GOR and not talking about dissolving the conference?

The members voted for GOR, so I suppose they can

Vote it out. Why? Perhaps to unleash the anchor around every program's neck so they can pursue an 'afterlife'. Hopefully enough smart folks are in that room and realize that if a school no longer has a viable football program, they have no athletics to speak of, thus GOR doesn't amount to much.

This is purely a football issue, since as the obvious has been regurgitated repeatedly...that's the revenue driver. Each program now needs to look inward and be realistic about their respective futures, realizing they aren't all the same. If you've not been a perennial football power the past 20-plus years, it's not going to happen...move on. Define and relocate your athletic niche elsewhere.

I wasn't clear.

Why would a school vote to abolish the GOR if they weren't planning on leaving the conference anyway?

Example: Why would UNC abolish the GOR if they weren't heading for the SEC or B1G. As soon as the GOR is abolished FSU, Clemson and any other school that has an invite to SEC or B1G or even Big 12 will tell the ACC to pound sand. That would kill the conference as a P5 viable conference immediately. They would lose money from ESPN and other places.

Seems to me if you have the votes to abolish the GOR, you have the votes to abolish the conference. And, if you abolish the conference, then you don't have to pay any exit fee to leave.

Good questions. An assumption could be made that the two aren’t mutually exclusive. In other words, abolishing the GOR first may provide a safety net from any potential lawsuits if/when the conference is dissolved? Not knowing any of the legal technicalities of the GOR…maybe it’s possible that only dissolving the ACC could still leave some sort of financial liability to that contract? Pure and total guess and probably a bad one.

I look at the present situation as "Clemson giving the

No conference equals no tv money which equals disaster fir 15 athletic departments. University Presidents are smarter than that.

Once everyone knows that there are enough votes to abolish the conference …the rest of the conference will be more than happy to abolish the GOR and allow schools to leave freely.

The ACC can remain as a solid basketball conference with schools like Duke, Syracuse, Louisville, Pittsburgh, and Georgia Tech.

They can also field an 85 member football team

Well what that's telling you is that the SEC and Big Ten aren't interested in adding new teams.

No, it isn't...

Think about the dynamics at work here. If GOR is voted out, then a member can leave without the albatross around its' neck. There is no need to dissolve the conference in a proactive manner...economics will handle that all on its own.

The ACC is toast...period, insofar as football is concerned, at the very least. The economics say no football...not athletics. No athletics, no need for a conference. So, why vote for dissolution?

Voting out GOR allows all to assess what is in each member's best interest going forward. Will it happen...heck if I know. But, the question was why would GOR be voted out, so I took a stab. Nothing more.

As for SEC/B1G interest...entirely separate subject, but don't think for a second that baggage doesn't slow the process. The difference between the SEC and B1G is vision...and in my opinion, B1G's vision beats the SEC in spades.

Think about the dynamics that you actually have to have another conference to join before you to anywhere.

I agree with you.

If a school doesn't have another conference to go to then they shouldn't even think about abolishing the GOR or the conference.

But, if a school does have another conference to go to then they should want to do one or both of the above ASAP.

With 7, or 8 counting UL, banding together to work on increasing revenue (wink, wink) I conclude those schools have another conference that wants them.

Unfortunately, I'd have to say that's wishful thinking. I'm just looking at this objectively, and if you do that, the conclusion, maybe unfortunately, is that Clemson and Florida St are not going to be able to leave the ACC.

Since too many ACC schools prefer basketball over football,

1

May 16, 2023, 10:12 PM

they should just let FSU and Clemson leave, and the rest of the ACC can just merge with the Big East! Call it the Big Atlantic Conference!

It's all a bunch of smoke and mirrors. The what (7) schools want out but are just not saying it, YET! At least not in public. Not until their destinations are confirmed with invitations. Oh but something is coming.
