Clemson's Simms proud to wear the USA flag after gold medal win

Clemson forward Aamir Simms watched the final seconds tick off the clock in the Tigers’ win over Ukraine, grabbed the American flag and did a lap around the court. It was a moment he will never forget.

So Proud of this team

Jul 14, 2019, 8:19 AM

The way the represented not just Clemson, but the greatest country the world has ever seen! Showed immense heart and grit and fighting spirit throughout the tournament- this is a fantastic achievement. Hopefully Clemson does something special to recognize this team as they clearly deserve our support!

What a great contrast to the women’s soccer team so this was good timing in my opinion.

Is this an indication of a better team this year. Did the extra practice and games add quality to the team? Or was the competition just really poor. I would like to vote for the experience. Go Tigers....capitalize on victory

Yep, it may not be a ACC or NCAA championship, but it is a Gold metal that says Clemson represented our country well against the rest of the world as college basketball players. And I believe that all of college basketball in America can be proud that Clemson represented our country like champions in front of the rest of the world. And I'm sure that all college basketball players in the United States was cheering for Clemson in every game of the World University Games, and I believe that our country is also proud of our Clemson Tiger Basketball team and the Gold metals that they brought back to our country!!!

No they didn't win the most prestigious basketball championship of all championships as in NCAA basketball national championship. But they did win a basketball championship, and they are the World University Games Champions!!! That's what we have to be proud of our basketball team for, and I'm truly proud of them. It was our Tiger team that put the World University Games Gold metal in our trophy case!!! Go Tigers, so proud to be a Clemson Tiger Fan through the good and not so good, but proud just the same!!!

It's just refreshing to see guys proud to represent our flag, rather than a bunch of childish SJW's trying desperately to get their 2 minutes of fame.

Others should take note: this is how you represent. Proud of these guys.

Wow. I wonder if all the patriotic trumpsters on here will spend the next two weeks screaming as much about Simms desecrating the flag as they did about Rapinoe standing silently during the national anthem. And if not, I'll certainly be surprised, as we know what true Americans they are in all things.

You are right. The American flag is not an article of clothing.

The flag is not to be worn as apparel. That is not what Simms did. All of the do's and don'ts involve disrespect of the flag. An athlete draping it over themselves in celebration is not done in disrespect and has been a long standing tradition that I have not heard anyone complain about. As for Rapinoe, the only reason that she is standing quietly rather than kneeling is because the US Soccer Team players are not allowed to kneel while representing the country. She would not have been allowed to play.

You need to read section 176 of the the flag code. What he did was totally disrespectful to our flag. You do realize that the flag was absorbing the dirt, grease, oils, sweat and body odor on his skin.

You realize he meant no disrespect by what he did right?

The kid is not a member of the military. I’m still proud of him.

Endorphins when you posted it, though, so you’ll always have that.

Very impressed with these guys. I’ve fallen out of watching Clemson basketball. Not because we’ve failed to break through, but because we have so many transfers I can’t really get into it. But this certainly impressed me, AND gave them some valuable experience to gel. Good stuff.

the way the played was great. But when CBB said he had gotten all sorts of comments about how courteous the guys had been to others there and how they conducted themselves with class meant a lot to me. During the Gold medal game Ukraine got frustrated and there where 2 or 3 hard intentional fouls. Our guys just ignored it and kept playing. It could have gotten chippy but they didnt get drawn in to that. I was proud of that also.

Re: TNET: Clemson's Simms proud to wear the USA flag after gold medal win

This is such a dumb title for TN to post. Why wouldn't he be proud to be an American and display the flag.
People need to be careful of how they think others should show their love for this country. My father, an 80 year old African American leaving just minutes from Clemson, loves this more than anything. But how do you think he was treated by this country in the 50s and 60s. Not many of you would love this country if it treated you the way he was treated. But he love the ideals of America, "in search of a more perfect union".

So, we all don't demonstrate our patriotism the same way... And before you question me... I spent 32 years on Active Duty in the Army, for this country. From age 17 to 49.

Go Tigers!

Totally unbelievable the comments you get from turds about the flag. No one ever thought that a person being happy and delighted holding a flag would be doing anything disrespectful to it. The forefathers would be fine with this, as am I.You guys need to get a life. I hope the White House invites the team.

The team won, right? Represented the US and Clemson, right? The players are proud of their school, country and flag, right???

Nothing to see here.
