Not trying to be a smarty pants but I doubt he flew a B-52 Stratofortress over Germany in WWII. They didn't exist then. I appreciate his service no matter what he flew.

Most likely a B-17. That's what my grandfather was on in Europe. Anyway, he has really cool story and seems to be a good young man himself. Proud to have guys like this in our program.

No one flew B-52s in WWII and there were no US jets in combat in WWII.

The B-52 was not in service until the mid 1950s. Probably meant a B-25.

Sorry, but there were no B-52's during WW2. Whoever wrote the article must have meant a B-24 or perhaps a B-17.

His name is Sgt. Tom Barnhart from Gray Court, and he won 2 bronze medals and a purple heart. He was a radioman on the bomber, and he rescued one of the crew. He was the tall quiet leader called Pappy (oldest at 22). He and his fellow POWs were marched out of Stalag 17 near end of war, as the Germans did not want to be captured by the Russians. They marched them 280 miles partially through the Alps. Before the capture, the German Guards gave their weapons to the POWs. Schultz and Col. Klinker were non Nazi Austrian conscripted as guards as they were too fat and too old to be in combat. The basis of the comedy was the tension when the Gestapo inspected the camp, and the guards had to act strict and more like Nazis which was against their character.
You can look Sgt. Tom up in the Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress, and there is a book about them called KEEPERS OF THE FLAME by the small tunnel digger. "Pappy" is mentioned and praised several times in the book.
