Was he really the very first punter drafted as a junior?

the 49ers have one of the better punters in the league in Andy Lee (born and raised on Westminster, SC and for some reason not recruited by Clemson). In fact I was surprised the niners would use a draft pick for a punter when they have a good one already. I am not sure Pinion would be able to win this job. Good luck to him!
Go Tigers!

but he's getting ready to be expensive so the 49ers are looking to replace him.

Baalke said Pinion will have to beat out incumbent Andy Lee for the punting job. The way I look at it: Lee, the longest-tenured player on the squad, will have to be well ahead of Pinion to keep his job.
Pinion’s selection has everything to do with the salary cap. Lee, one of the top punters in the league over the last decade, is due to earn more than $2 million this season, and that cost only goes up in the three seasons to follow. He’s scheduled to have a base salary of more than $4 million in 2018.
A fifth-round pick like Pinion will average about half a million dollars in upcoming seasons. Why did the 49ers draft a punter? Follow the money.

Nobody wants to use that much cap space on a punter

same deal with Catman last year in Arizona. The talent gap/results are not enough to justify that gap in pay. kickers are most expendable player in nfl.

Well I guess if he doesn't see any UGA or FSU players anywhere, he could do OK.

Bowden wouldn't give Andy Lee a scholarship. Told him to walk-on. He had other offers. I believe he would have loved to punt for Clemson. Bowden didn't believe in wasting scholarships on specialist. And we paid for that many times.

Bowden had strange ideas about a lot of things, like building a great OL and then adding specialists. We paid for that a lot over the years, and I don't think many would disagree that our OL performance was lackluster under him, and for a long time after. We now are making it a strength, and our performance will reflect that. It will be really nice to be able to run it on the goal line or for a first down, instead of having to use some trick play or a QB pass/run option to get a yard when we need it.
