New Story: Jeff Scott: "We've been a cat with nine lives for a while"

Jeff Scott: "We've been a cat with nine lives for a while"

Clemson ended Saturday’s loss to Pitt with the kind of stats any offensive coach would be proud of. But the most important stat of all is on the scoreboard, and the Tigers fell a point short in the 43-42 loss to the Panthers. Full Story »

It caught up to us because of poor game management. Only needing 3 points there at the end. Needing to run clock off the board. Coaches still have a lot to learn. Thank god for our excellent talent. Up this game is a learning lesson for the entire team.

This is LAME coach speak. All we had to do was NOT give Pitt a momentum shift when we had 2nd and goal at the Pitt 3 yard line. RUN the ball twice with Gallman ( preferably outside the tackles ), use up clock, take the 3 point field goal, and probably win the game. Our coaches ( and especially the Head Coach who has a headset on and I assume is listening to the play calls ) have to be smarter than they apparently are. DeShaun has had a tendency to throw interceptions, and there is a lot of tape on what his tendencies are. Not much room near the goal line for passes, and we didn't have to have the TD!

Our coaches always seem to make excuses for their stupidity and never say that they screwed up and shouldn't have done this or that...I hope they at least realize it behind the scenes ( if not publicly ), but I really wonder. It is a shame to get this far in the season and still haven't learned what not to do!

Poor running formation with a single back and no misdirection of any kind and weak play calling, especially in critical situations. Stop so much east/west passes and go north/south. Really?

Turnovers are still the great equalizer. We continue to have them. DW is not ready for them NFL. I think MW and JL are the only 2 ready for the next level. JG missed key block on 4th and 1. BB is excellent on the run, but a liability in pass coverage. Just does not have the necessary speed. Is DW's shoulder an issue in him not running? Lose = time to address the tough issues and calling people out. No longer hide behind close wins.

Pitt. imposed their will on our offensive and defensive lines. We got dominated on the line of scrimmages IMHO.

lol I thought for a sec you made that name up just for this

Ooooooooo.....Jeff, they will TD the crap out of you for saying, out in public, that we have gotten extremely lucky several times and should have lost before now. Even if it is truth up and down.

it was stupid to run WIDE with the heavy package***

Coach Scott,

With all due respect, please stop with the coach speak. I just want to hear a coach say, "We put our players in position to make plays and win. Sometimes, we mess up on a call, sometimes we don't execute, and sometimes the other team calls the perfect play against us. It happens, were human too."

We have very young co-OCs and they will mess up. Heck, they have 2 losses since they took over. Its ok, we are still young at OC. But calling a pitch play with Jumbo when both Tackles are back-ups is just poor play calling. DW4 up the middle, behind a Senior starter, with #42 and #90 pushing him was the better call. Learn from it and move on to WF.

Scott, Elliott, and Dabo..just own bad calls as much as you take credit for good ones.

The only coach who takes responsibility for his mistakes as well as credit for his success is Venebles. The young OCs can learn from watching him.

OT

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oh really coach if you know that then FIX IT and stop

Nov 13, 2016, 3:13 PM

calling stupid plays in critical situations....like passing the ball at the 3 and dumb pitch out plays counting on your linemen to make a block...how about DW under center and go off tackle for 1 YARD! If you can not make it then kick a field goal. Judas!

Re: And the lesson learned is...

Nov 13, 2016, 3:24 PM

,,, don't leave the game in the hands of the offensive line. They can pass block but will get out muscled in the run game. Been waiting all year for this group to be mean and nasty. It may not be in their blood.

We've been "5 for 5" but never with a pitch, that's not what they're out there for.
Instead let's use the jumbo package on 3rd and let's run straight at them.

Who ever called the pass play on 2nd and goal at 3 with

Nov 13, 2016, 8:19 PM

an 8-point lead is at fault. That pass should have never been called. Either Elliot or Scott is to blame for that loss. Same thing on the deep pitch to the short side of the field for one yard.

I know, I know we're 24 - 2 over the last couple years but I would like to hear the coaches come out and say we really did a pi$$ poor job of clock management and play calling and apologize to the players like someone said, coach BV is the only one that does.

Here's hoping

Nov 14, 2016, 4:37 PM

That we can end the JV offensive co-coordinator experiment after the season. We need a real OC who will identify issues on the front-end and work towards fixing them, rather than saying "Well, we've been pretty lucky. Just keep doing what we're doing."
