Never really understood Burch hype after watching him play

Dec 18, 2019, 8:12 PM

From an aesthetics standpoint, their no question that the guy looks the part. However, when I watched Hammond actually play a real team earlier in the season on ESPN, I just wasn't impressed. He looked physically much bigger than the guys blocking him, but he couldn't do much of anything against them. He barely made a play that entire game and it wasn't like he was getting double and triple teamed. He struck me as a guy that you want first off the bus, but strength and skill-wise, he has a long way to go from a development standpoint. Maybe he eventually gets there (not likely with SCar), but he's definitely not an immediate impact type of guy and isn't that big of a loss for us IMO.

Say what you will but I agree. I've seen him play in person and he was not impressive, at least not that night. My experience with private schools and I attended one, is that if you have a really good player they stand out like a neon light. That wasn't the case with him. I played at a private school with a RB that got a full ride to Furman. When he walked on the field you knew he was the best athlete on the field and in the town we were playing in. Burch didn't even strike me as being that type of player but as I said, it was one game.

In the one game they showed on ESPN, he sure got

pushed around like he was on skates by guys half his size. Did he even make a single tackle the entire game? Honestly, I didn't see one D-1 type player on that team.

But that was just one game. Maybe they were all just "off" that game, camera shy or something.
